    [01] Two-day sessions of PASOK's Central Committee

    Meeting of the PASOK's Central Committee. Prime minister Costas Simitis said the three key words describing the ruling party's transformation are: "upgrade, renewal and expansion". The PASOK's Executive office met to discuss current political developments and preparations being made for the meeting of PASOK's Central Committee.

    [02] Evert asked for a session of the ND disciplinary committee

    In the continuing disturbance prevailing within the ranks of the main opposition New Democracy, party deputy and former leader Miltiadis Evert asked for a session of the party's Disciplinary Committee to expel ND deputy Yiorgos Karatzaferis, for his recent harmful public statements. Mr Evert voiced his request in a written statement which also expresses backing to current leader Kostas Karamanlis. Party leader Kostas Karamanlis met with the ND deputy Andreas Andreoulakos while today is to meet Vyron Polydoras and Dora Bakoyanni.

    [03] A critical meeting of the Coalition Central Committee

    The Coalition Central Committee will convene this weekend, to examine party policies and decide on its future course and more members belonging to the party's so-called "modernizes' faction" are expected to follow suit. The Political Secretariat of the Left Coalition party, heard an announcement by member Nikos Bistis that he was intending to leave the party on the grounds of political divisions. Speaking to the state Greek Radio, Coalition high-ranking member Petros Kounalakis described these developments as a heavy blow to the leftist party.

    [04] The proximity talks on the Cyprus were postponed for May 23rd

    An announcement by the UN, said that the third round of UN-led proximity talks on the Cyprus dispute, to be held in New York, were postponed for May 23 to allow time for Cyprus president Glafkos Clerides to fully recover from a recent medical operation.

    [05] A pre-agenda debate on the 2004 Olympic Games in Parliament

    The New Democracy party leader Kostas Karamanlis called for the holding of a pre-agenda debate in Parliament on the current situation regarding the organization of the 2004.

    Olympic Games and the steps that will have to be taken for the preparations to be finished satisfactorily and on time. In a letter to the speaker of the Parliament, Apostolos Kaklamanis, Mr Karamanlis explained that he called for a debate to be held immediately because the organization of the 2004 Olympics was apparently in jeopardy, while he maintained that the construction delays would probably lead to what he described as "unclear procedures" regarding the assignment of project contracts. The debate Mr Karamanlis proposes will have to take place by the end of May when the current session of Parliament come to an end.

    Meanwhile, during a meeting with the Greek culture minister Theodoros Pangalos in Lausanne, the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Huan Antonio Samaranc congratulated the Greek government on the measures have been taken for the preparation of the 2004 Olympics.

    [06] Meetings on the Parthenon Marbles

    Culture minister Theodoros Pangalos, who is currently in London, had meetings with the members of the Greek-British Friendship Committee, the British historian William Senclair who revealed the damages suffered the Parthenon Marbles during their preservation in the British Museum and the journalist William Stewart who made the documanteur dealing with the history of the Parthenon Marbles.

    [07] Events are taking place in Bucharest

    A "Ten-day on Greek Culture" event is taking place in Bucharest, Romania, on the occasion of the completion of ten years since the setting up of the Union of Greeks living in Romania.

    [08] Six mothers were awarded

    Six mothers-heroes from Greece, Kosovo, Cyprus, Serbia and Turkey were awarded by the Foundation for Child and Family, in Athens, on the occasion of Mother's Day, on May 14.
