  • [01] CYPRUS PRESIDENT GLAFKOS KLERIDES DENIED REPORTS ON THE IMPLEMENTATION IN CYPRUS OF A GOVERMENT SIMILAR TO THAT IN BELGIUM.

    Cypriot Pres Glafkos Kleridis on Saturday categorically denied press reports according to which the Greek-Cypriot side is examining the implementation in Cyprus of a goverment system similar to that in Belgium. At the same time he criticised the mass media for publishing information which only served to create confusion.

    Mr.Klerides also described as untrue, reports about talks between Cypriot and foreign goverment officials, in relation to the proposal on the participation of Turkish- Cypriots in Cyprus- EU accession negotiations. Mr .Kleridis underlined that it was up to the Turkish-Cypriot side to decide whether they wanted or not to accept the proposal.

    Meanwhile, the Turkish-Cypriot representative Rauf Denktash remains firm in his position that recognition of the self- styled Turkish-Cypriot state constitutes a necessary precondition for a resolution of the Cyprus dispute.

    Mr.Dektash also criticised Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou, because _ as Mr Dektash claimed - he had proposed the granting of regional rights to Turkish- Cypriots in a Greek- Cypriot Republic.

    [02] GREEK POLITICAL PARTIES INTENSIFY THEIR PREELECTION CAMPAIGN.

    With the preelection campaign well under way, Primeminister Kostas Simits on Saturday was on a tour of Thrace and Eastern Macedonia.

    The list with the candidates of the ruling Pasok party is expected to be announced on Friday, after the meeting of the party's central committee.Preliminary elections for the appointment of candidates were held yesterday in all the Pasok party prefectural committees thourouht the country.

    In the meantime, the ND party precongress on agricultural policy and the combat of crime wound up on Saturday, with a speech by the ND party leader Kostas Karamanlis, during which he accused the PASOK party of misinmforming the Greek people.

    The General Secretary of the Greek Communist party Aleka Paparigha ended yest a 3-day visit to Thessaloniki.

    Mrs. Paparigha stated that she was in favour of weak governments with strong political opposition , while the President of the Coalition party Nikos Konstantopoulos criticised the governement's agricultural and regional policies.

    The president of the Democratic Social Movement party Dimitris Tsovolas from Patra appeared certain that the Greek people would vote against the goverment policies.

    [03] GREEK PRESIDENT KOSTIS STEFANOPOULOS IN YANNENA .

    Greek President Costantinos Stephanopoulos is in Yiannina to attend the 78th anniversary of the city's liberation.

    [04] NATIONAL ECONOMY MINISTER YANNOS PAPANTONIOU IN LONDON.

    National Economy Minister Yiannos Papantoniou left for London on Saturday, at the head of a delegation of Greek bankers and businessmen to present to foreign businessmen the achievements and the positive prospects of the greek economy with the aim to attract foreign investors. On Tuesday Mr. Papantoniou will visit Brussels in order to brief the european parliament on Greece's course towards Economic and Monetary Union.

    [05] GOLD MEDAL IN SAILING GOES TO GREEK CHAMPION NIKOS KAKLAMANAKIS.

    Greek champion in sailing Nikos Kaklamanakis won the gold medal in the World Sailing Championship which took place in Argentina.
