The representatives of all political parties agreed only on the banning of candidate deputies' advertisement through radio and television.Opposition New Democracy party leader Kostas Karamanlis yesterday called on the holding of a pre agenda debate on the conditions of the pre-election juxtaposition. The leader of the Coalition of the Left Wing and Progress Nikos Konstantopoulos urged the press minister Dimitris Reppas and the presidents of the Radio and Television Council of Greek state Radio - ERT - to make sure that the rules were followed and the parties share equal air time on television. The Democratic Social Movement leader Dimitris Tsovolas has criticized the mass media. In Reply to Mr Tsovolas' statements, the press minister Dimitris Reppas said that the state radio and television responded to the citizen's pluralistic information. [02] VASILIS KONTOYANNOPOULOS WILL JOIN FORCES WITH PASOKFormer minister and independent deputy Vasilis Kontoyannopoulos yesterday announced his decision to join forces with Costas Simitis and the ruling PASOK party in the second electoral division of Athens.Mr Simitis responded by expressing his pleasure in relation to Mr Kontoyannopoulos' decision. [03] A MEETING AT THE MAXIMOS MANSION THIS MORNINGPrime minister Kostas Simitis will chair a meeting on the 2004 Olympic Games this morning with the participation of ten ministers.The agenda of the meeting includes issues such as the transfer of Hellinikon airport and the creation of sport installations in the present area, the creation of a rowing center in the region of Schinias, a speed highway Stavros- Elefsina and a suburban railway.[04] NEW DEMOCRACY PARTY REACTED TO AVRAMOPOULOS' DECISIONAthens mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos has decided to stick to his post, refusing a proposal made to him by the New Democracy party leader Kostas Karamanlis to be a conservative party candidate in the upcoming elections.The leadership of the party preferred a low-profile reaction to the mayor's decision -- a stance not shared by party supporters, who reacted angrily to Mr Avramopoulos' statement. [05] COSTAS SIMITIS AND GEORGE PAPANDREOU VISIT BUCHAREST TODAYThe stability pact for the southeastern Europe will be signed by the prime ministers of six southeastern European countries tomorrow, in Bucharest with the aim of renewing cooperation in the region. @@ The prime ministers of Greece and Turkey, Costas Simitis and Bulent Ecevit, as well as the foreign ministers of both countries, George Papandreou and Ismael Cem, are scheduled to meet on the sidelines of the meeting. The prime minister and foreign minister will leave Athens for Bucharest with their entourage, this afternoon.@@ The signing ceremony of the charter of good neighborliness, stability, security and cooperation in southeastern Europe will take place today.Taking part in the Interbalkan summit meeting in Bucharest will be prime minister Simitis together with the leaders of Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, Turkey and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The six leaders will discuss the situation in the Balkans and are expected to focus their attention on the implementation of the stability pact. Yugoslavia is not participating and the Romanian foreign ministry has announced that this will be the case until the situation in that country is normalised. [06] KARATZAS HAS FORECAST A SIGNIFICANT DROP IN INTEREST RATESThe governor of the National Bank of Greece Theodoros karatzas has forecast a significant drop in interest rates this year.Replying to reporters' questions, during a press conference, he said that by the end of the year, interest rates will be at European levels. Mr Karatzas also announced that in 1999, the National Bank group enjoyed increased profits of 99% amounting to 362 billion drachmas, compared to 182 billion in 1998.
