  • [01] GREEK GOVERNMENT SATISFIED WITH AMERICAN STATEMENTS

    The Greek government has expressed its satisfaction following corrective statements from the American side, as regards the views of anonymous American officials about terrorism in Greece which were published in the "Washington Post". Acting government spokesman Nikos Athanasakis described the article in the "Washington Post" as scurrilous and ridiculous but added that the matter was closed. Environment, planning and public works minister Kostas Laliotis described the article as provocative and despicable. Opposition parties also reacted strongly on the matter.

    [02] TRIPARTITE MEETING IN BULGARIA

    During talks in Borovac, Bulgaria, yesterday, Greek prime minister Kostas Simitis and the Bulgarian and Rumanian presidents, Petar Stojanov and Emil Constantinescu, stressed the need for a specific timetable for the implementation of the stability pact in the Balkans. Mr Simitis' interlocutors expressed their satisfaction and gratitude over the Greek plan for the reconstruction of the Balkans, which provides for state and private investments worth 500 million dollars in the next five years. 14 bodies found so far in gutted ferry-boat car deck Another three illegal Kurdish immigrants were found dead yesterday in a truck on the "Super Fast III" ferry, which caught fire earlier this week. Authorities are looking for the driver of the lorry, which bears Danish number plates. So far, 14 bodies have been recovered by rescue teams. Two of the Kurds who perished in the fire were carrying stolen Greek passports. The prosecutor general yesterday ordered a preliminary investigation into charges that port officials were involved in the transportation of illegal immigrants from the port of Patras.

    [03] GREEK POSITIONS ON KOSOVO CRISIS OUTLINED IN STRASBOURG

    In Strasbourg, yesterday, Greek alternate foreign minister Christos Rokofyllos outlined before the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe and the Council of Europe's foreign ministers' committee the set Greek positions on the settlement of the Kosovo crisis.

    [04] NEW DEMOCRACY PARTY LEADER PRESENTS HEALTH PROGRAMME

    Opposition New Democracy party leader Kostas Karamanlis presented his party's health programme yesterday, according to which state hospitals will become non-profit private organisations. Commenting on Mr Karamanlis' statements, health minister Lambros Papadimas said the New Democracy proposals would lead to the privatisation of the National Health System.

    [05] GREEK PRESIDENT TO INAUGURATE EXHIBITION IN MUNICH

    President of the republic Konstantinos Stefanopoulos is expected in Munich on Sunday to inaugurate the exhibition: "Modern Greece - Greeks and Bavarians during the era of Ludwig I". The exhibition is held at the National Bavarian Museum and will run until mid-February next year.

    [06] GREEK AND CYPRIOT LEADERS TO MEET ON 20TH NOVEMBER

    Cypriot president Glafkos Kliridis will meet with Greek prime minister Kostas Simitis in Athens on 20th November, while Greek foreign minister Giorgos Papandreou will visit Cyprus later. This was announced by Cypriot government spokesman Michalis Papapetrou, who reiterated that Mr Papandreou's trip was not postponed by the Cyprus Republic, as reported in the press.

    [07] FIRE BOMB DISCOVERED IN DOWNTOWN ATHENS

    A fire bomb planted outside the office of former public order minister Theodoros Anagnostopoulos in downtown Athens was detonated by bomb experts yesterday afternoon.
