  • [01] PRIME MINISTER BRIEFS PRESIDENT ON ECONOMY

    Prime minister Kostas Simitis yesterday briefed president Konstantinos Stefanopoulos on the latest developments in the Greek economy. Mr Simitis stated afterwards that the economy would continue on its good course and the government would continue applying its programme firmly.

    [02] PRIME MINISTER MEETS FARMERS

    During a scheduled meeting today with the presidium of the Panhellenic Confederation of Unions of Farmers' Cooperatives, prime minister Kostas Simitis is expected to announce the reduction of interest rates for farmers' loans and economic aid for the purchase of farming equipment.

    [03] GREEK FOREIGN MINISTER MEETS BRITISH COUNTERPART

    Greek foreign minister Giorgos Papandreou met with his British counterpart Robin Cook in London yesterday. Mr Cook said afterwards that a decision on the recognition of Turkey as a candidate country for admission to the EU would merely be a first step in a long course.

    [04] HOMELESS TO BE MOVED FROM TENTS BECAUSE OF RAINY WEATHER

    The transfer of the people made homeless by the September 7th earthquake in Attica to shelters and hotels began yesterday, following the rainy weather prevailing in the region. A census of the earthquake-stricken population in the municipality of Athens and 23 other municipalities and communities has been extended also due to the rainy weather.

    [05] EL GRECO EXHIBITION OPENS IN ATHENS

    Queen Sophia of Spain, who is paying a private visit to Greece, yesterday attended the opening of the El Greco exhibition at the National Gallery in Athens. Also present at the inauguration were president Konstantinos Stefanopoulos, prime minister Kostas Simitis, ministers, the mayor of Athens and other officials. The exhibition, which includes 72 paintings by the famous Greek painter Dominikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco, will be open to the public tomorrow.

    [06] ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH TO VISIT ALBANIA

    Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos of Constantinople is to pay a visit to Albania in early November. He will be the first Patriarch to visit Greek Orthodox communities in Albania since the Church of Albania was declared autocephalous.

    [07] SALARY INCREASES FOR OFFICERS OF ARMED AND SECURITY FORCES

    The government yesterday decided to increase by 7% the salaries of officers of the armed forces, the security forces and the port police corps. The pensions of civil servants will also be increased by 3,000 to 8,000 drachmas, starting on January 1st, 2000.

    [08] AMERICAN OFFICIALS VISIT CYPRUS

    The American presidential envoy and the American state department coordinator for the Cyprus issue, Al Moses and Thomas Weston, left for Nicosia last night, after their talks in Athens with foreign minister Giorgos Papandreou.

    [09] POLICE FOOT-PATROLS EXTENDED

    About 3,000 policemen will start foot patrols in Attica on a 24-hour basis, as an extension of a pilot measure being applied for some time now, which had impressive results in crime prevention.
