[01] GREEK ALTERNATE FOREIGN MINISTER VISITS ISRAEL
Alternate foreign minister Yannos Kranidiotis is leaving tonight on a
two-day working visit to Israel. He is to convey an invitation from
Greek prime minister Kostas Simitis to Israeli prime minister Ehud
Barak to visit Greece. During his stay in Israel, Mr Kranidiotis will
meet with senior members of the new Israeli government, among them
Israeli foreign minister David Levi. His talks will focus on the course
of Greek-Israeli bilateral relations, developments in the region as
well as the forthcoming Israeli-Palestinian meeting which will take
place in Athens in early September. The meeting will be held in the
context of a Greek initiative dubbed the Athens dialogue, which is part
of the confidence-building measures decided upon at Wye Plantation. The
Greek alternate foreign minister will also meet with Greek Orthodox
Patriarch Diodoros of Jerusalem and president of the Palestinian
authority Yasser Arafat.
[02] GERMAN CHANCELLOR EXPECTED IN GREECE IN OCTOBER
German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder is to visit Athens on October 4,
returning a visit to Bonn last year by Greek prime minister Kostas
Simitis. The agenda of the talks between the two leaders is expected to
focus on issues of bilateral and mutual interest.
[03] PRIME MINISTER MADE HONORARY CITIZEN OF SIPHNOS ISLAND
The local authorities of the island of Siphnos have decided to honor
prime minister Kostas Simitis' predilection for their island, where he
has been spending his summer vacation in the past few years, by
proclaiming him honorary citizen of Siphnos. The ceremony will be held
on the island on 12 August. After his summer holidays, Mr Simitis is
scheduled to pay various visits abroad. On 24 August he will pay a
one-day visit to Albania, while visits to Bulgaria, Romania and
probably the FYROM are being prepared through diplomatic channels. On
3, 4 and 5 September, Mr Simitis will be in Thessaloniki for the
International Trade Fair and is to deliver the customary speech on
economic policy. From 15 to 21 September, Mr Simitis will pay his first
official visit to China.
[04] GREEK PRESIDENT DECLARES OPEN NATO RESERVE OFFICERS MEETING
President of the republic Konstantinos Stefanopoulos yesterday declared
open the annual conference of Nato reserve officers. In his speech, Mr
Stefanopoulos praised the virtue of Nato officers, but underlined their
duty to defend the ideals of liberty, democracy and peace.
[05] CYPRIOT HOUSE SPEAKER VISITS CRETE
Speaker of the Cypriot house of representatives Spyros Kyprianou has
paid a three-day visit to Crete, at the head of a large delegation.
Referring to diplomatic efforts for a Cyprus solution, Mr Kyprianou
said he was awaiting the invitation of the UN secretary general for the
opening of a new dialogue. He said the basis for dialogue should be in
conformance with UN resolutions. Finally, referring to Cyprus'
accession to the EU, Mr Kyprianou said accession might lead to a Cyprus
solution and stressed this would depend on the stand to be adopted by
European countries.
[06] ILLEGAL RE-OPENING OF HOTEL IN TURKISH-OCCUPIED CYPRUS
The renovation works and the reopening of the hotel Salamis Bay in
Famagusta in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus is a new
provocative act on the part of the self-styled Turkish Cypriot state of
Rauf Denktash, especially at a time when strong international efforts
are being made for the resumption of the intercommunal dialogue and the
settlement of the Cyprus issue. Reports said the hotel will start
operating, although illegally, on August 21st, while the opening
ceremony will take place on September 3rd.
[07] GRADE RESULTS OF GENERAL ENTRY EXAMS RELEASED YESTERDAY
Physics and history were the key subjects for success at the general
examinations for entry into higher educational institutions, following
the grade results which were released yesterday. The lowest grades for
entry into each faculty and school will be released in early
September.
[08] ATHENS-THIRD MILLENNIUM ORGANIZATION
Mayor of Athens Dimitris Avramopoulos has announced the establishment
of an organisation entitled "Athens - Third Millennium", in view of the
2004 Olympic Games to take place in Greece. The new organisation will
play a supplementary role in organizing the games, together with the
"Athens 2004 Organizing Committee" in which the municipality of Athens
is already participating. The new organisation will take initiatives to
promote the historical and cultural identity of Athens.
[09] MYKONOS PORT AND AIRPORT MODERNIZED
Minister for the environment, planning and public works Kostas Laliotis
yesterday inaugurated the new port of the island of Mykonos, which can
offer docking facilities to two cruise ships, 6 ferry-boats and 150 to
200 smaller craft. Mykonos airport is also being modernized and
extended, at an estimated cost of 6 billion drachmas. New road
networks throughout the island are also planned and a circular road is
already under construction.
