  • [01] Prem Watsa: 'Greece has overcome most of the challenges'

Greece's economy, after many years of difficulties, is now becoming an attractive destination for investments and its prospects for growth are good, Fairfax Financial Holdings Chairman Prem Watsa said on Tuesday at an event organised in his honour by the Eurolife ERB Group in Athens.

"The Greek economy has gone through many difficulties in recent years. I believe that the country has overcome most of the challenges and for this reason I am quite optimistic about the future," Watsa said. Fairfax Financial Holdings believed in the growth of Greece's insurance market and this was proved by the successful investment in the Eurolife ERB Group, Watsa added.

[02] Prosecutor investigating complaint of 'suspiciously similar' wording in court rulings favouring bank

A first-instance court prosecutor on Tuesday launched an investigation into two first-instance court rulings finding in favour of a Greek bank, after a lawyer representing the litigants filed a complaint that the two rulings had a suspiciously similar wording.

According to a report sent by the lawyer Yiannis Kyriakopoulos to Justice Minister Stavros Kontonis, Alternate Justice Minister Dimitris Papangelopoulos and Supreme Court Prosecutor Xeni Dimitriou, the two court rulings were identically worded in key sections of their reasoning, even though they concerned different cases, involved different judges and were issued at different times.

"We cannot accept the issuing of 'copy-paste' rulings in cases that concern entirely different real events and we ask that justice investigate," Kyriakopoulos said, adding that the case will be taken before European courts if necessary.

Kyriakopoulos was representing private bond holders seeking compensation from the same bank for their losses as a result of the Private Sector Involvement (PSI) debt haircut for Greek state bonds in 2012, on the grounds that the bank had sold them the bonds. In both cases, the courts had thrown out the compensation claim against the bank, with two rulings issued within one month of each other.

[03] Shipping ministry preparing bill on revamping of ports to attract cruise ships

Shipping Minister Panagiotis Kouroumblis said he is preparing a bill to resolve problems in the infrastructure of ports and bays in Greece and called on private companies to take on the task of reconstruction in exchange for concessions.

"We are aiming for 9-10 ports to have the ability and convenience that would allow large ships to approach," Kouroumblis said, addressing a parliamentary committee on the possibilities and the prospects of cruise tourism.

"We are determined to move forward in resolving infrastructure problems, continue with concessions and [for] infrastructure to be built by private entities. This is a great field for construction companies," he added.

Kouroumblis also said the cruise sector has great potential as the Mediterranean is the second largest destination for tourists and Greece has many comparative advantages compared to other countries.
