  • [01] Court to examine again Turkey's new extradition request for eight Turkish officers

A Greek appeals court will discuss for the second time an extradition request by Turkey for eight Turkish army officials who fled to Greece after the foiled coup attempt in the neighbouring country in July 2016.

Last January, the Supreme Court rejected Turkey's request, citing concerns about whether they would receive a fair trial and possible violation of human rights. A few days later, Turkish authorities sent a new extradition request to their Greek counterparts.

Suleyman Ozkaynakci, Abdullah Yetik and Ferudum Caban will appear in Athens' Appeals Council at noon on April 25, while the other five have not yet received a trial date. All eight officers will be represented by Christos Mylonopoulos and Omiros Zelios, the same lawyers they had in the previous court proceedings.

Since the Supreme Court ruling the eight officers have been staying at the police station of the former Olympic Village, waiting for the rulings on their asylum requests.

[02] Aegean and Olympic Air record 5 pct increase in passenger traffic in Q1 of 2017

Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air recorded a 5 percent increase in passenger traffic in the first quarter of 2017 reaching 2.1 million passengers, the company said on Wednesday.

Aegean said the increase is attributed entirely to the international network with the addition and maturity of destinations and the efficient penetration to international markets, leading to a 17-percent growth of international traffic to 1.1 million passengers.

Domestic traffic was 6 percent lower than last year's to slightly less than one million passengers as the company adjusted the activity to soft demand with lower fares, reduced flights and hence achieving improved load factors.

Load factors improved significantly both in domestic and international routes by eight percentage points reaching 77 percent, a record high level for a winter season.

"We have recorded improved load factors during the winter season with attractive fares which give the chance of affordable trips on a wider network with more choices for our customers. The quality of our product continues to be internationally recognized on an increasing number of markets abroad," said Aegean Managing Director Dimitris Gerogiannis.

Áegean and Olympic Air carried 12.5 million passengers in 2016. Its 2017 network will cover 145 destinations (33 domestic and 112 international) to 40 countries. Since June 30, 2010 Aegean is a member of Star Alliance, the strongest airline alliance worldwide. The company was honored with the Skytrax World Airline award, as the best European regional airline in 2016.
