  • [01] Europarliament VP Papadimoulis to ANA: Eurogroup's decision is the result of mutual concessions

The Eurogroup in Malta paved the way for an agreement and the conclusion of the second review of the Greek programme. The compromise reached has negative and positive points; it is fiscally neutral and requests the meeting of the commitments by all sides without further delays, stated European parliament vice president Dimitris Papadimoulis in his article in Athens Macedonian News Agency.

The whole package of the agreement will conclude with the specification of the mid-term measures for the debt relief the size of the primary surpluses after 2018 and it must be concluded as soon as possible. This will give the green light for the completion of the review and the disbursement of the tranche. Greece has made clear to the institutions that the measures will be implemented, as part of a total package of measures that will include the relevant agreement for the debt and the realistic primary surpluses, something that will bring balance to the final result and offers positive prospects for a sustainable and strong growth of the Greek economy in the next years.

The decision of Malta's Eurogroup is the result of mutual concessions both of Greece and the institutions. The already significant progress achieved in the public finances and the real economy, the gradual decline of unemployment and the reforms in many sectors have laid the foundations for the country's exit from the supervision in August 2018.

In order these goals to be achieved, it is very important the government to increase its efficiency and performance. The mandate we received from the people in September 2015 was clear. To take the country out of the crisis, to have growth instead of recession, to reduce the unemployment and to improve the citizens' every day life. Within this context we are moving and we should continue moving with more effort and consistency in order in 2019 (when general elections will be held according to the Constitution) the Greek people to be able to evaluate if and to what extent we have succeeded.

One of the most important threats for the European structure is the danger of division and fragmentation that will strengthen the extreme-right, centrifugal and populist powers. We have seen it in the Netherlands, we can see it in France, in Hungary, in Poland and in Germany as well as in Italy. The examples are many and in a large number of EU countries.

The coming period will be crucial for Greece and EU and we should contribute not only in Greece's final exit from the supervision but also in the change of EU's course with the strengthening of the policies of cohesion and growth.

[02] The 'breath' of Kolumbo submarine volcano

Scientists from Italy and Greece proved that a submarine volcano 'breathes' during its active phase. Their research focused on the volcano Kolumbo.

Kolumbo is a shallow submarine volcano, part of the Hellenic Volcanic Arc, located 7 km NE of Santorini, and is considered as one of the most active and dangerous submarine volcano in the Mediterranean. In 2006, an active hydrothermal vent field (HVF) was discovered on the north part of Kolumbo's crater, at 504 m below sea level.

The volcano releases gases and hydrothermal fluids approximately every two minutes, something that constitutes its "breath".

This attitude has been observed for the first time globally. The submarine volcanoes are extremely complex and dynamic environments that have been scarcely observed until today.

According to Greek scientists the finds of the research can become the first step to understand the mechanisms related with the gassing of huge quantity of energy in a submarine volcano and is expected to become a basis on the forecast of volcanic eruptions in submarine volcanic environment and to evaluate the size of the volcano's breath danger for the people, the environment, the ecosystem and the economy.
