  • [01] Greece will emerge stronger from this crisis, says PM Tsipras during meeting with French PM Cazeneuve

The Greek-French cooperation may pass to a more substantial level because Greece will emerge stronger from this crisi , said Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras during his meeting with visiting French Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve at the Maximos mansion.

Cazeneuve expressed France's huge solidarity to Greece and the Greek people along with France's confidence in the Greek recovery. He noted that this is confirmed by the spectacular results which can become even better, he added.

[02] IMF must reduce its demands, French FinMin Sapin says

French Finance Minister Michel Sapin sent a message to IMF to reduce its demands. After successive meetings with Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos and Economy Minister Dimitris Papadimitriou, Sapin said that "the IMF has been here since 2010. If it leaves, it would be a pity for Greece's credibility. Agreements must be reached. You cannot ask everything from Greece. Greece has made a lot of efforts."

Referring to the negotiations for the second programme review, Sapin wished that an agreement is reached by March 20 Eurogroup adding that the Greek institutions are discussing with the creditors and France is here to help and stress that it is time for an agreement, it is time to look to the future. "The situation has improved. An agreement is necessary so that confidence is improved and Greece returns to growth, employment and autonomy."

[03] Agreement with institutions on time, estimates gov't VP Dragasakis

An agreement with the institutions will be reached on time because the programme's targets are met, government Vice President Yiannis Dragasakis estimated on Friday.

Dragasakis was speaking at the Delphi Economic Forum.

He noted that the agreement delays because the lenders have different views and the IMF asked for an additional 3.6 bln euro package of measures. Another obstacle is the extrajudicial issue of the non-performing loans.

[04] February 20 Eurogroup set the framework for review conclusion, French PM Cazeneuve says

The Greek government and the Greek people have made a lot efforts and sacrifices that were necessary in order for the country to restore its competitiveness and balance its public finances, French Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve on Friday said in an interview with Ethnos newspaper.

Cazeneuve also spoke about the future of the EU and the eurozone as well as the political developments in France.

He also expressed his full support to the efforts of the Greek government and the people and underlined that the February 20 Eurogroup set the framework for the conclusion of the second programme review.

"Greece should continue to benefit from the third aid program, particularly in view of the significant debt repayment deadlines this summer," he stated.

Moreover, he stressed the need to strengthen Europe adding that "we should prove its efficiency and safeguard its unity."

[05] Popular Turkish actor Hakki to hold key role in Athens theatre play

"I like challenges, difficulties and risks," he said adding that he is not scared. What I admire and love in Greece is friendship, Turkish actor Burak Hakki said in an interview with the Athens Macedonian News Agency (ANA). Hakki is going to hold a role in a Greek play that will premiere on March 9 at a downtown Athens theatre. Hakki became popular playing emotional Kenan in the hit series "Kismet."

"I always want to progress, to learn new things, to test myself. Playing in the theatre of another country, speaking a foreign language in front of tens of people is the most difficult thing I have ever tried to do," he stated.

"I highly appreciate the theatre and the people of the theatre," he underlined adding that he is very happy he has the opportunity to participate in a theatre play as less than five theatres are now operating in Turkey due to the political developments.

The full interview is available in Greek at ANA's website.

[06] Number of migrants and refugees on northern Aegean islands fell below 9,000

The number of refugees and migrants stranded on the island of Lesvos fell below 4,000 for the first time after a long period. As a result the number of stranded on the northern Aegean islands that have sought asylum and their request has been not examined yet is now under 9,000.

According to police, 8,988 people were on Friday on the northern Aegean islands. 3,969 of them are hosted in hotspots on Lesvos, 3,342 in hotspots on Chios and 1,677 on Samos.

Moreover, in the last 24 hours 45 persons arrived on Lesvos, 17 on Chios while no arrivals were reported on the island of Samos.

[07] EIB's head gives vote of confidence to Greek economic outlook

"We are the bank that stayed and expanded its activities in Greece during the economic crisis. Many in Europe may believe that there is no creativity in Greece, but it exists and this will give the economy the ability to grow," European Investment Bank (EIB) chairman Werner Hoyer said on Friday.

Addressing the 2nd Delphi Economic Forum, Hoyer said EIB's exposure to Greece accounted for 10 pct of Greek GDP and noted that the European Union has taken the part of the responsibility arising from the principles of subsidiarity and solidarity. He said that a Juncker Plan aimed at reducing an investment gap of 750 million euros by 100 million euros annually, but warned over the need to speed up productivity rates in Europe and to develop digital economy, a sector where the EU lagged behind.

Mark Array, vice-president of Hellenic Initiative USA, addressing the forum referred to the necessity of creating communication bridges between the Greek diaspora and Greece. He said that the Hellenic Initiative USA managed to organize businessmen in Greek diaspora, for the first time under US President Bill Clinton. Hellenic Initiative USA has presented the Hellenic Entrepreneurship Award and supports programs to reunite Greeks living abroad with their home country. "The basic characteristic of Greece is its human capital," Mark Array said. "Patriotism, Religion and Language are the bridges that will unite us. We must build bridges. All together," he said.

[08] It is a moral and political obligation to protect the European project, EU Commissioner Avramopoulos says

It is a moral and political obligation to protect the European project, EU Commissioner for Migration and Internal Affairs Dimitris Avramopoulos on Friday said.

Avramopoulos was speaking at the Delphi Economic Forum to be held until March 5.

He added that the ideas shaping the European vision are now challenged by populism and nationalism voices that exploit the refugee crisis. "Some believed that the catalyst for challenging Europe would be the economic crisis. It turns out to be the refugee and migration crisis. And this is because the management of this crisis shook the two basic principles on which the European structure is founded: solidarity and responsibility," he stated.
