  • [01] Foreign ministry: Personal attacks do not promote Greek-Turkish relations

Greece's foreign ministry criticized comments made by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Friday about the islets of Imia and the eight Turkish servicemen who requested asylum in Greece, saying personal attacks do not promote the relations between the two countries.

"When someone is unable to respond politically to the facts, he may well not understand them. He may not grasp the technical, legal and political aspects of the issues, and for this reason chooses to make personal attacks. Attacks that do not promote the relations between the two countries and are foreign to our political culture. One's actions reflect on oneself," the ministry said.

Asked in an interview with Anadolu Agency on Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias' remarks that the Turkish "general staff chief couldn't set foot on the Imia even if he wanted to," Cavusoglu was quoted as saying: "If his duty was to do so, he would have done it. Let's not forget that we set foot on the places we were supposed to. Our stance on Kardak is clear."

Commenting on the Greek Supreme Court's decision not to extradite "Turkey's 8", Cavusoglu claimed Greece is "preventing the traitors from being prosecuted for their crimes" which is "not in line with good-neighborly, friendly relations."

[02] Thousands of revelers flood Patras' streets for Carnival's night parade

More than 30,000 participants took to the streets of Patras on Friday evening to participate in the western port-city's night Carnival march that precedes the main parade on Sunday.

Celebrations kicked off shortly after 18:30 with the Carnival King leading the parade, followed by the Carnival Queen and other municipal floats. The group is followed by 126 teams participating in the "treasure hunt", dressed up in colourful costumes inspired by fairy tales, daily life and, of course, politics.

Revelers are lining the sidewalks of Corinthou Street and Aghios Georgios Square to admire the Carnival crews and dance to the music blasting from the speakers placed around the main streets. The celebrations and parties will continue all night and culminate on Sunday when the main show will start at 14:00 and conclude with the closing ceremony at 21:00 at Aghios Nikolaos dock.

Similar celebrations and dress up parties are taking place throughout Greece including the capital, where locals held a "Zombie parade" in the city center.
