  • [01] Tsipras calls on ND leader to submit motion of censure

    Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras accused main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis that when his party was government it signed for a 4.5 pct surplus target.

    "We managed to reduce it to 3.5 pct," the prime minister said and accused the leader of the main oppossition that he has not replied to the creditors' irrational demands.

    Moreover, Tsipras said that New Democracy is looking for figures to prove that the economy is underperforming while he accused Mitsotakis that during his visit to Berlin he created a negative climate for the Greek government. "You knew that you were facing a strategic impasse and you went to Berlin to create a negative climate for the Greek government," the prime minister said and added: "I listened to your spokesman saying that your party would submit a motion of censure in case the programme review is not concluded by February 20" Tsipras said and called on Mitsotakis to submit a motion of censure in order to prove that the goverment is united and determined to take the country out of the crisis.

    [02] ND accuses government of lack of security in the country

    Main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Friday speaking to Parliament said that Greece is an ungovernable country, and the situation is out of control as a result of government decisions and policies.

    "The security of the citizens is the most important obligation of the state ... an organised state must guarantee the security of the citizens," Mitsotakis underlined adding that anyone who is afraid is not free.

    He also said that violence and criminality have increased during the SYRIZA-ANEL governance. More specifically, robberies increased 11 percent, car and motorbikes thefts also rose by 9.5 percent.

    Finally, he stressed that New Democracy is obsessed ideologically with the issue of security.

    [03] Crime is not a new problem, PM Tsipras replies to ND leader Mitsotakis

    The problem of crime is not new in Greece; it is a problem that we have been facing for a lot of years, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Friday said in Parliament in reply to New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis' accusations.

    Tsipras lashed out at the main opposition leader saying that he is making use of that issue for political purposes and stressed that what is important right now is the negotiation with the creditors.

    [04] Four metro stations including Syntagma closed on Saturday and Sunday

    The metro stations Syntagma (line 2 and 3), Argyroupoli (line 2) Nomismatokopeio and Doukissis Plakentias (line 3) will be closed at the weekend due to technical works for the installation of the new automatic ticket checkers.

    Syntagma station will remain closed and on Monday 20 February.

    Trains will pass through these stations without stop.

    [05] Dr George Nounesis appointed director of national center for scientific research "Demokritos"

    Dr George Nounesis was appointed director and chairman of the board of the National Centre for Scientific Research "Demokritos".

    Professor Nounesis was born on Corfu in 1959 and studied Physics at the Athens Kapodistrian University and got his Ph.D in Physics at the School of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Minnesota in 1987. After three years of post-doctoral research in the Chemistry dept of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) he worked as researcher at the Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory of MIT.

    Since 2002 Nounesis is director of research at Biomolecular Physics Laboratory of National Centre for Scientific Research "Demokritos".

    His research mostly focuses in biomolecular physics and particularly in hybrid nanomaterials

    [06] 67 refugees arrive on Lesvos

    67 migrants and refugees arrived on Lesvos on Friday after zero arrivals on all the islands of the northern Aegean in the last ten days.

    Police said that on Friday 9,643 people who have sought asylum and their request has been not examined remained stranded on the islands of Chios, Lesvos and Samos.
