  • [01] EU Commission to be represented at highest level in Geneva conference, Karvounis tells ANA

The European Commission will be represented in the conference on the Cyprus issue in Geneva at the highest possible level with the participation of the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and High Representative Federica Mogherini, proving the importance that the European Union places on the solution of the Cyprus problem, European Commission Representation in Greece Panos Karvounis on Wednesday said in statements to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA).

Karvounis underlined that Cyprus is a member state of the European Union and the eurozone and this will not change now or in the future adding that the European Union has been investing in human resources and funds for several years.

[02] Greek inflation rate unchanged in December

Greek inflation rate remained unchanged in December after 45 months of decline, for an average rate of -0.8 pct in 2016, Hellenic Statistical Authority said on Wednesday.

The statistics service, in a report, said the consumer price index was unchanged in December, after falling by 0.9 pct in November and by 0.2 pct in December 2015. The statistics service attributed this development to declines of 0.8 pct in food/beverage, 1.2 pct in clothing/footwear, 0.1 pct in health prices, 1.5 pct in entertainment prices, a 0.4 pct fall in education, a 2.8 pct decline in durable goods, an 1.8 pct fall in housing prices and an 1.2 pct fall in transport prices. Communication prices eased 0.7 pct, while hotel/coffee/restaurant prices fell 1.3 pct.

The composite consumer price index rose 1.0 pct in December from November 2016, after a 0.1 pct increase recorded in the same period in 2015. The average index in the January-December 2016 period fell 0.8 pct from an 1.7 pct fall recorded in 2015.

Greece's harmonized inflation rate rose 0.3 pct in December, after a 0.2 pct fall in November and a 0.4 pct increase in December 2015. On a monthly basis, the harmonized inflation rate grew 0.4 pct in December, while on average levels, the index was unchanged in December from an -1.1 pct decline recorded in 2015.

[03] Heavy snowfall and extremely low temperatures on Wednesday in northern and central Greece

The extremely low temperatures and the heavy snowfall are still creating huge problems to the transport and the people's every day life in northern Greece. Snow is falling in Thessaloniki and the thermometre shows -04C. Flights to and from Macedonia airport are currently carried out normally but many flights were cancelled on Tuesday due to heavy snowfall.

Snowchains are mandatory for vehicles moving on the regional roads of central and western Macedonia. The temperatures are extremely low in western Macedonia, -18C early Wednesday in Florina and Ptolemaida and -14C in Grevena.

Heavy snow is currently falling in the central Greek city of Larissa where the thermometre shows -07C and in Lamia where the snow has brought immense problems in the traffic even in the central city roads. Buses are not moving while ambulances and police cars must have snow chains to move in the city roads.

Traffic is prohibited to trucks on the Athens-Thessaloniki motorway.

Meanwhile, the islands of Alonissos and Skopelos are still without electricity and water because the desalination plant can't operate without electric power. The snow has reached 2.5 metres in several parts of Alonissos while the snow in the town of Skopelos reached 1 metre after Tuesday's snowstorm.
