  • [01] Pavlopoulos notes need to fight extreme inequality in message for Human Rights Day

President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Friday referred to the challenges that strike at the core of fundamental human rights and undermine the cohesion of societies and people, in a message to mark International Human Rights Day on December 10.

Noting that humanity and fundamental rights now faced many enemies, Pavlopoulos said that the people of Europe, especially, must assume their share of responsibility to restore peace, defend democracy and fight extreme inequality, primarily through justice and the rule of law.

[02] Tsipras an 'outgoing and panicked prime minister', ND says

Main opposition New Democracy on Friday strongly criticised the one-off benefits to pensioners announced by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras as a desperate attempt to shore up his government, which had deprived pensioners of many times that amount through recent measures.

"It is now clear to all that Mr. Tsipras appears as an outgoing and panicked prime minister, trying to gather together the ruins of his policies with spasmodic actions," an ND note said.

Tsipras was promising to distribute 617 million euros to those on low pensions but had already deprived them of many times that amount by lowering the tax-free allowance, gradually abolishing the EKAS low-pension benefit and imposing a 6 pct contribution on all pensions that cost pensioners 710 million euros, ND pointed out.

At the same time, pensioners were asked to fork out more money through hikes in VAT, fuel, coffee and cigarettes.

[03] Supreme Court to consider Turkey's request for the extradition of eight Turkish officers that fled after failed coup

Greece's Supreme Court is to render the final judgement on Turkey's request for the extradition of eight Turkish army officers that fled after a failed coup in the country last July. The extradition request was denied by Greek appelate-level judges for five of the eight officers but the head of the appeals prosecutors Antonis Liogas has lodged appeals against these rulings.

The extradition was granted for three of the eight officers, who have also now appealed against the decision.

According to Liogas, the file presented by Turkish authorities is adequate for the extradition of the eight officers so they can stand trial for participating in the attempted coup, while judges are obliged to accept the request under international treaties that are binding for Greece.
