  • [01] Gov't spokesman reiterates country's position on Lausanne Treaty

The Greek government states its position only on confirmed facts. Particularly, on foreign policy issues, as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's statements on Tuesday, we should wait and see the official confirmation and the official translation," said government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos on Wednesday.

"The confirmation of the statement came after the press briefing. In any case, we reiterated the country's clear and stable position on the Lausanne Treaty. A position clarified and repeated many times by Prime Minister Alexi Tsipras and Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias".

[02] ND leader Mitsotakis expresses concern over national issues

Main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday addressing his party's parliamentary group referred to national issues.

"The Cyprus talks have been intensified, we support with all our strength President Anastasiadis' efforts but we are concerned over the other side's steps" said Mitsotakis adding: "Turkey is unpredictable, Erdogan's statements question the international conventional foundation, the Treaty of Lausanne. They are unacceptable statements that add another major concern in the region. Albania is putting all issues on the table. The agreement on the refugee issue is at stake. In such an environment, Greece is on the margins, the government has no clear national strategy. On fiscal issues we are not part of any solution, the international community is facing us, at best, with compassion and pity, but this is not enough to defend our interests. The meeting in Berlin -with the participation of Germany, France, Netherlands, Spain, and Italy - shows that people want to decide for us, without us. If we did not have the miserable SYRIZA - ANEL government, Greece could be a growth engine."

The leader of the main opposition stressed once again the need for elections.

[03] Exports of fresh fruit and vegetables up this year

Exports of fresh fruit and vegetables in the period 2015-2016, which ended in September, recorded a significant increase in both value and volume, Incofruit Hellas said on Wednesday.

The Federation, in a report, said that exports of fresh fruit and vegetables at the end of 2016 will record an increase of 16-18 pct, compared with 2015, surpassing 1.5-1.6 million tons.

George Polychronakis, special advisor to the Federation, said, however, that since August 2014 all trade weighed sale price per kilo are down. Despite a Russian embargo -which interrupted a rising trend of previous periods, a readjustment of export targets and an expansion of traditional markets, combined with the opening of new markets and a low domestic consumption led to a 10-year record in the exports of fresh fruit and vegetables in the 2015-2016 period.

Exports of oranges grew 54.8 pct in volume and 41.7 pct in value to 164.8 million euros, tangerines grew 41.2 pct in volume and 45.1 pct in value to 51.4 million euros, lemons grew 259.8 pct in volume and 270.5 pct in value to 14.6 million euros, apples grew 35.5 pct in volume and 17.9 pct in value to 40.2 million euros, kiwis grew 3.9 pct in volume and 18 pct in value to 76.6 million euros.

Exports of peaches grew 17.8 pct in volume, apricots grew 59.3 pct, strawberries were up 9.6 pct, water melons rose 5.1 pct, while cherries fell 41.2 pct in volume, along with table grapes (-33.8 pct).

[04] Refugees flow to northern Greek islands post significant increase in the last days

Migrants and refugees flow to the northern Aegean islands has posted a significant increase in the last days.

285 people arrived on Lesvos from Friday to Wednesday morning while 245 migrants and refugees reached the coasts of Chios and 69 persons on Samos in the same period. The total number of refugees (599) is equivalent to 5 percent of migrants and refugees that are currently stranded on the Greek islands.

Police said that 5,918 refugees and migrants were recorded on Wednesday on Lesvos, 3,558 on Chios and 2,278 on Samos.

[05] Ships docked on Thursday due to 24h strike

Hellenic Seamen's Federation declared a 24h strike on Thursday demanding the safeguarding of their fundamental labour rights.
