  • [01] Tsipras: The next five months will be critical

"This year we are at a turning point and the next months are the most critical ones, because they will mark the turn of the economy to growth," Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Thursday welcoming producers from Thessaloniki and Northern Greece ahead of the 81st Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) on September 10-11.

Tsipras underlined the importance of producing wealth from this growth, but to be distributed in a fair way on healthy and productive forces of the economy.

The prime minister noted that the "next day' for the economy is approaching as the next five months will determine the debate on debt relief. "This may allow us to be included in the ECB's quantitative easing program, which of course will mark a new era, after six years of great difficulties," he said.

According to Tsipras, the main aim of the government, beyond the development course and the normalization of the economy, is the creation of jobs. He said that "Northern Greece can become the engine of production and reconstruction and we must must support this effort, not with words but with acts". "We want allies in this great effort for the recovery and productive reconstruction," he added.

[02] Prolonged austerity does not help Greek economy's revival, says Michael Dukakis

President Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Thursday in a meeting with Michael Dukakis, Democrats candidate for US presidency in 1988, estimated that Greece will overcome the crisis.

Pavlopoulos underlined that the European Union sees again the need for policy change adding that austerity deepens the gap between rich and poor and highlights the social impasses.

The President estimated that Greece will overcome the crisis and this effort should be supported by all democratic political forces united, despite individual differences.

On his part, Dukakis said that Greek Americans always want to help Greece and stressed the need for European policy change, noting that prolonged austerity does not help the economy to revive. Referring to the Greek economy, he stressed the need to provide further incentives for development.
