  • [01] Conditions for a real recovery present for first time, Dragasakis tells head of commerce federation

The economy has entered a period of stabilisation, with the conditions for a real recovery present for the first time after a long period of recession and uncertainty, government Vice-President Yiannis Dragasakis said on Tuesday. He made the statements in a meeting with the head of the Hellenic Confederation of Commerce and Entrepreneurship (HCCE) Vassilis Korkidis. The priorities of the upcoming period will be to stimulate investments and create new jobs, with the government hoping for a substantial contribution from business in this effort, Dragasakis said.

"It is necessary to adopt a new, effective and efficient model of cooperation between the state, social collectives and market players," Dragasakis noted.

According to an announcement, Korkidis presented the HCCE's demands and proposals and Dragasakis expressed support for measures generating conditions that encourage economic activity and employment, while giving a second chance for the entrepreneurs hard hit by the lengthy crisis.

They also discussed the possibility of providing liquidity to SMEs through specially-designed banking programmes and new financing instruments specialising in micro-loans.

Korkidis outlined specific proposals and initiatives for economic growth on the Greek islands, with Dragasakis noting that the government is "working systematically" to draw up a comprehensive plan for islandness that will address both the long-term problems of the islands and the current challenges, such as refugee flows. Both sides noted a need to exploit developmental potential on Greek islands in sectors other than tourism.

The minister and HCCE head promised to arrange a follow-up meeting soon and thus launch regular cooperation on specific issues.

[02] Mitsotakis: Government is incapable of guaranteeing law and order

New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis criticized the government on Tuesday for its inability to guarantee the safety of Greek citizens, following an attack against the head of Athens' traffic police on Monday night by unknown assailants.

"It is clear for some time now that the government cannot ensure the safety of its citizens – now not even its police officers," Mitsotakis said. "The specific incident crossed the line. It shows the government is unable to guarantee law and order."

[03] Turkish judge seeks political asylum in Greece

A 50-year-old Turkish justice on Tuesday requested political asylum in Greece after illegally entering the country, claiming persecution by the Erdogan regime.

According to sources, the Turkish judge was found near Agia Eleni on the island of Chios at 6:00 on Tuesday, in a plastic dinghy with another six refugees from Syria. He immediately declared his identity to the arresting coast guard officers and said he had boarded the boat on the Turkish shore south of Cesme. He also presented personal documents certifying his capacity as a judge and requested political asylum, saying that he was being persecuted for his ideas in Turkey.

The 50-year-old was arrested for illegal entry into Greece and will soon be transferred to Athens so that his asylum request can be considered.

Both police and coast guard authorities on Chios are refusing to make any statement regarding the case and say an official announcement will be issued in the next few hours.
