BERLIN (ANA-MPA/ F. Karaviti) German finance ministry spokesman Martin Jaeger on Friday denied any suggestion that the Greek programme was "brutal," saying that it had been in proportion to the difficult situation in Greece and the only option.

He also expressed optimism that Athens will implement the third programme and added that next week, the German representative at the European Stability Mechanism will approve the disbursement of the next tranche of loans.

According to Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, Greece has implemented the reforms agreed to a great degree and is moving toward regaining the markets' confidence. Speaking at a conference organised by Deutsche Bank, the German finance minister said that Greece can begin to stand on its own two feet and regain access to credit from the financial markets.

In a "Handelsblatt" interview, Schaeuble noted that Greece has already greatly increased its ability to be competitive in the global market, reducing the cost of borrowing by 12 pct, but still needed to carry out further reforms to ensure fiscal stability and the repayment of its loans in the long term.

German lawmakers on Friday gave a "green light" to the next tranche of loans to Greece, opening the way for the disbursement of an installment of 7.5 billion euros at the end of next week.
