  • [01] Greek labour unions to strike on Saturday against pension reforms

Greece's major labour unions will hold a 24-hour nationwide strike against the government's proposed pension reforms on Saturday, according to one of the unions on Friday.

The public and private sector unions ADEDY and GSEE along with local administration employees, teachers, engineers, workers, hospital employees, journalists, lawyers and pensioners are expected to gather at Omonia square at noon and march towards parliament.

"The battle is for decent pensions and full social security," ADEDY said in its press release. "The government's recent proposals to the Quartet of creditors do not constitute, as it claims, a social insurance reform that will save social insurance but a new looting of pensions, with all pensioners but especially those that go into retirement after the law is passed as its victims," it added.

[02] Benaki Museum selects former IfA head Olivier Descotes as new director

The 40-year-old former head of the French Institute in Athens, Olivier Descotes, will replace Dr. Angelos Delivorias at the helm of Greece's prestigious Benaki Museum starting on March, the museum announced on Friday.

"The selection of Olivier Descotes by the Administrative Committee of the Museum was unanimous. It derives, on the one side, from our awareness of the specific needs of the museum today for empowerment and openness, and on the other hand from his proven experience as head of major cultural organizations," the president of the Committee, Emilia Geroulanou, said in an announcement.

The selection process lasted for a year after Delivorias stepped down last year after 40 years in the position. Benaki Museum organized an international competition through global executive search firm Egon Zehnder to find his replacement, which it said attracted 86 Greek and foreigner candidates.

"Our goal was the selection of the new Director to be made with the utmost objectivity and with widely accepted criteria in order to find the right person … in a difficult transition period, who will ensure the way forward and the museum's development," Geroulanou added.

She also expressed her optimism that Descotes will be successful "despite the adverse conditions facing our country for some time."
