  • [01] First refugee 'hotspot' opens in Lesvos

ANA - MPA -- The first "hotspot" for refugees and migrants was inaugurated in Lesvos on Friday as part of Greece's implementation of the agreements with the European Union to manage migration and refugee flows.

The refugee and migrant registration center was visited by Immigration and Home Affairs Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos, Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn and Greek Alternate Minister for Migration Yiannis Mouzalas.

In statements to the press after the visit, Avramopoulos said the operation of the first hotspot "signifies that the identification and registration plan of refugees is operating fully". This, he noted, is an important beginning, "but we still have a long way to go to implement hotspots in other areas, to start relocations and improve the repatriation of irregular migrants".

[02] Over 15,000 to take part in 29th Tour of Athens charity run

ANA-MPA -- More than 15,000 people have registered to join in the 29th Tour of Athens charity run taking place in the city on Sunday, which this year seeks to raise awareness for children suffering from epilepsy and help with the purchase of an EEG for the Aghia Sophia Children's Hospital neurology department. The race, which takes in some of the major landmarks of the City of Athens, will set off from the Kalimarmaro Panathenaic Stadium at 9:00 on Sunday and follow a circular route that ends back at the stadium. The centre of the city will be closed to traffic along the route of the race on Sunday morning until 11:00 and parking will be forbidden on most major roads. The Tour of Athens consists of four different routes of different length, with staggered start times. The 10-kilometre race will start at the Kalimarmaro Panathenaic Stadium at 9:00, the Five-Kilometre race will start at Vasileos Konstantinou Avenue at 9:15, the Three-Kilometre race at the Herodes Atticus Odeon at 9:30 and the One-kilometre/Disabled Race will start at the National Gallery opposite the Hilton Hotel at 9:15. Participants will also be able to travel free of charge on Athens public transport from 7:30 until 12:30 on Sunday if they display their bib number.
