  • [01] Caretaker PM Thanou informed of upcoming UN summit on refugees

ANA-MPA -- United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon on Tuesday contacted the head of Greece's caretaker government Prime Minister Vassiliki Thanou on the telephone, informing her of a summit meeting on the refugee crisis to be held at the UN on September 30, alongside the UN General Assembly. He expressed hope that Greece will be represented at the highest possible level. Thanou promised to convey his message to the head of the new government elected on September 20, noting that the UN was the most appropriate international body to address the refugee problem. She also briefed him on additional measures taken by Greece's caretaker government to deal with heightened refugee flows since it took over and the urgent nature of the issue. Thanou underlined the importance of close and steady cooperation between Greek governments and European authorities, as well as with the UN High Commission for Refugees, in handling this issue.

[02] SYRIZA's Tsipras: ‘We ask for a strong mandate for the Left to govern'

ANA - MPA -- The leader of SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras, asked Greeks to grant him a strong mandate in the upcoming elections to give the Left a chance to govern, during a campaign speech in the town of Komotini, in northern Greece on Monday night.

"People are standing on their feet; we're all standing and claiming, not a second chance, as it is usually said, but a first chance. A first chance for the Left to finally govern. Because the first period which lasted only seven months, the opportunities to govern were very few," he told the crowd.

Continuing his speech, he noted that SYRIZA's program is not the product of a party mechanism, or of some people who are cut off from the people and their agonies. "It's the road map of liberation we propose to the people. And we ask for a strong mandate and an even stronger participation to walk the new difficult road."

He said that despite the difficulties and the adversity, the government managed to show the kind of changes it wants and can make.

[03] New Democracy: ‘Tsipras pretending to be against the bailout'

ANA-MPA -- New Democracy accused SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras on Tuesday of lying and pretending to be against the bailout deal signed by his government an of not knowing what it includes. "The tradition of Thessaloniki continues with Tsipras telling again monstrous lies," the party said in a press release, noting the privatization of power grid operator ADMIE and the sale of power utility PPC's 50 pct stake of its production capacity are clearly stated in the bailout program signed by Tsipras and ANEL leader Panos Kammenos.

[04] Potami has 10 priorities, Stavros Theodorakis tells ANT1

ANA-MPA -- Responding to SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras on Tuesday, the head of the Potami party Stavros Theodorakis called him "a man who grew up in luxury and an obvious rich kid." "I will not tolerate Tsipras and SYRIZA calling me populist and privileged. I will not accept attacks regarding my principles" Theodorakis said on ANT1 private TV.

Potami leader referred to New Democracy (ND) noting "I spoke clearly about ND. I said that it is the party that did not dare to elect a leader and want to directly elect a prime minister. I called on Evangelos Meimarakis to say which of the old policies will he implement".

On post-elections cooperation scenarios he said: "Before we talk about cooperations we must see how the country's political map will be formed after the elections. We have a list with specific issues, a list with ten priorities.
