  • [01] We are not looking for a government role, PASOK leader says

ANA/MPA---PASOK is fighting a multi-sided battle in a serious, direct and responsible way, its leader Evangelos Venizelos on Monday told Vima FM and noted that the party is trying to assume a consensus role in the name of the national interest.

He said that in the European parliament elections, New Democracy came in second and SYRIZA was the leading party adding that it was PASOK's rate that kept the government still stable and the negotiation going. He noted that if opinion polls are confirmed and SYRIZA is the leading party, then "a vote for PASOK is the counterbalance and a useful vote."

He also described Potami party as the "new Democratic Left (DIMAR)", a promiscuous formation that has not been tested.

"We are not tied to any government, we are not looking for a role in a government, we are trying to help with the conclusion of an effort for which we have made great sacrifices and which should not get wasted with amateurism, irresponsibility, frivolities and contradictions," he said. He also said it was up to the people to decide who will be trusted with the negotiation and the country's fate.

[02] The new Greek government will have to continue reforms, Juncker tells Reuters

Any new Greek government will have to deliver on the commitments of its predecessors and continue reforms, the head of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker told Reuters news agency.

His comments are seen as a clear warning to SYRIZA, which is solidifying its opinion poll lead over New Democracy before January 25 elections.

"Any future government elected in Greece will have to respect commitments already made and stay the course of reform and fiscal responsibility," Juncker told Reuters in a statement.

"Europe will stand by Greece. But Europe also expects Greece to stand by its commitments made vis-à-vis its partners," he added.

[03] Police arrest 33-year-old detained Algerian for terrorism activity in Belgium

ANA/MPA---A 33-year-old Algerian national, who was rounded up by police on Saturday at the Athens district of Pangrati following a request by the Belgium authorities, was arrested by the counter-terrorism squad on Sunday evening being accused of terrorism activity in Belgium.

The 33-year-old was arrested on an international warrant issued by the Belgium authorities that had initially notified the Greek police that the man was not related to the investigation into a group of jihadists which was dismantled following a bloody operation in Belgium. However, they later considered that Belgium investigators dealing with the case should also question the Algerian national.

The suspect will be sent on Monday to the prosecutor after a request for his extradition to Belgium.
