  • [01] KKE leader rules out collaboration with or support of post-election government

ANA/MPA---Strategic directions of several parties would allow the formation of a government, or even a large coalition, Communist Party of Greece (KKE) Secretary General Dimitris Koutsoumbas said on Tuesday, but "the time is not politically mature under the current polarisation."

In an interview to private Mega TV, Koutsoumbas said the polarisation "may lead to loss of voters" and he reiterated that KKE would not collaborate with any party or support any government.

The issue, he said, is not just what government is formed and how but how strong the popular opposition is, to support the labourer-popular movement in regaining lost rights and in putting an end to future measures.

The EU cannot change, he said, and the party was addressing itself to 30 percent of the people "who see the whole development of the EU, from its founding to the present, and reach its conclusions."

[02] Terrorist Xiros' alleged accomplices receive new extension to testify

ANA/MPA---Two men alleged to be accomplices of convict terrorist Christodoulos Xiros requested from the special magistrate for terrorism and received an new extension to testify on Saturday.

The two suspects, a retired police officer and a foreign national, were arrested following an arrest warrant issued by Athens' special magistrate for participation in a criminal organisation, illegal weapon possession and other criminal offences as well as harbouring a criminal.

    Both deny all charges.

[03] Alpha Bank, Eurobank seek liquidity through ELA

ANA/MPA---Two out of the four systemic banks in the country, Alpha Bank and Eurobank on Friday confirmed they applied for a credit support line from the Emergency Lending Assistsance mechanism through the Bank of Greece.

Speaking to ANA-MPA, bank officials said the two banks did not intend to make use of the capital available through ELA in the immediate future, as they continued having the necessary collateral for funding from the European Central Bank, but noted that the application was made purely for precautionary reasons because of the conditions prevailing currently. The Bank of Greece also confirmed the two banks' application for funding.

Officials from the two banks told ANA-MPA that their decision to resort to ELA was taken in order to deal with current liquidity needs because of a decline in deposits and the need to participate in Treasury bill auctions made by the Greek state, while developments in current markets in the aftermath of the Swiss central bank intervention was an additional factor. Credit from ELA was charged with an interest rate of 1.55 pct, up from 0.05 pct of the base lending rate of ECB.

The two banks' applications will be discussed by ECB next week. ELA is offered following approval by the European Central Bank with the responsibility of national central banks and it is offered only to viable banks on collateral.
