  • [01] SYRIZA's Tsipras visits '18 Ano' drug rehab centre school

ANA-MPA -- Main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras on Saturday paid a visit to the school operated by the drug and alcohol rehabilitaton centre "18 Ano", stressing that it was a community that inspired young people fighting to regain their dignity, giving them a vision to help them struggle for life.

He pointed out that addiction was not an incurable disease and the addicted were not people with special needs but needed the support of the state in order to be rehabilitated. The process of education provided a useful tool in that effort, helping them rejoin society and preventing their relapse, he added.

"It is shameful for our country, for our culture, that we cannot find the miniscule funds necessary, such as 6,000 euros a year, and that this school...remains closed even today," he added, saying it was indicative of the present government's attitude to how the state should deal with those that were marginalised.

[02] 32nd 'Authentic' Athens Marathon race on Sunday

ANA-MPA -- The 32nd 'Authentic' Athens Marathon, or Classic Marathon, following the original route from the site of the ancient battlefield to central Athens, will be held in Athens on Sunday.

Greek authorities have announced extensive traffic restrictions, with several roads closed to vehicle traffic, along the route.

The race starts in the coastal town of Marathon, runs the length of Marathonos Avenue, before moving onto Mesogion Avenue, Mihalakopoulou Street, Phidippidou Street, Vas. Sofias Avenue, Irodou Attikou Street and ending at the Panathenian Stadium in the city centre.

At the same time, a 5km race will start at the Panathenian Stadium at 8:00 on Sunday, following a circular route in the city centre, and a 10km race will begin at 9:00, again from the Panathenian Stadium, also circling the centre as far as Mesogion Avenue before turning back to the starting point.

At 9:10 there will be a Special Olympics Hellas race along Vas. Sofias Avenue, starting at Syntagma and ending at the Panathenian Stadium, while a Children's Race on the same route will begin at 10:45.

The traffic restrictions will start early on Sunday morning (6:00 in Marathon and 7:45 in the city centre) and last until 17:30 on Sunday, except on Vas. Georgiou II Street on the section between Rigillis and Irodou Attikou Street, where the restrictions will extend from 14:00 on Saturday until 19:00 on Sunday.
