  • [01] President Papoulias to meet PM, Tsipras on Monday

ANA-MPA -- President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias is to have successive meetings with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras on Monday, the president's office announced.

The president is to receive Samaras at 13:00 and Tsipras at 14:45. Late in the afternoon on the same day, at 17:45, President Papoulias will attend the swearing-in ceremony for the new National Defence Minister Nikos Dendias and the new Development and Competitiveness Minister Costas Skrekas.

Sources within SYRIZA said that Tsipras had asked for the meeting with Papoulias in order to brief the president on his party's positions concerning Greece's public debt and the economy, as well as international affairs.

They stressed that there was no change in SYRIZA's position that the country must have early elections, leading to a new government with a fresh popular mandate that can negotiate concerning the country's debt. The party is also fixed in its positions concerning the upcoming election of a new Greek president.

[02] Mid-season sales begin on Saturday, to mixed reactions

The 10-day mid-season autumn sales period starts on Saturday, November 1, amid mixed reactions.

The Federation of Private Employees (OIYE) has called a nationwide strike on Sunday, November 2, against the opening of stores.

Deputy Development Minister Gerasimos Giakoumatos on Monday is expected to announce changes to the rules on sales and discounts.

Meanwhile, according to a survey conducted by the National Confederation of Hellenic Commerce (ESEE) on businesses' shutdown, scheduled for release next week, the situation in the market is still stagnant.

In a statement, ESEE president Vassilis Korkidis expressed his surprise over the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV) and the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE) decision to appeal to the Council of State regarding the opening of the stores on Sundays and called on them to withdraw their motion.

[03] Delivorias to step down as Benaki Museum director after 41 years

ANA-MPA -- After 41 years at the helm of one of Greece's most prestigious museums, the Benaki Museum in Athens, Angelos Delivorias announced on Friday that he is stepping down. The 77-year-old director of the Benaki had repeatedly stated his intention to resign from the post.

As director of the museum for the last four decades, Delivorias oversaw its expansion with the opening of new departments in other parts of the capital, the enrichment of its collections, the presence of the Museum abroad through several exhibitions, as well as its economic demise in recent years, due to the economic crisis.

Apart from the main building housing collections tracing Greek history from antiquity until modern times, the Museum opened its Pireos Street annex, showcasing modern art, the Museum of Islamic Art and the Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika Gallery, housed in the former home of its famous namesake Greek painter.

"I dreamed of Greek timelessness, with all that this entails: the Greek language, the Greek soul," Delivorias said, visibly moved, in his farewell speech during a last-minute press conference.

He said he formed a proposal for the national role the Museum should play, "but unfortunately the Greek state didn't realise the importance of this proposal which, at the end of the day, was an international first for a museum."

"On the contrary, year after year, state funding diminished towards Benaki with the well-known unpleasant results," he added.

Benaki's financial woes are essentially due to the reduction of state subsidies, which have tumbled since 2010.

Delivorias will take a place in the administrative committee of the museum, replacing Marinos Geroulanos who is stepping down.

"We owe him everything," the President of the Administrative Committee Emilia Geroulanou said in her speech. "I know very well Angelos wanted to end his tenure differently. I know he had been incredibly burdened in the past few years when the Museum had to cut down on its staff and opening hours."

The Museum's administration said they are now looking for his replacement but will take their time finding the right person. "We will choose the best. We will take as much time as needed," Geroulanou said.
