"We are very happy because, right now, we are inside the surrounding peribolos and we are standing before an amazing tomb," the archaeologist in charge of excavations in the ancient Amphipolis site in the region of Serres, northern Greece, told ANA-MPA on Wednesday. The site was visited yesterday by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and his wife.

Archaeologist Katerina Peristeri told ANA-MPA that "as it has already been announced the entrance of the tomb is guarded by two Sphinxes, each two-meters-tall, while the 497-meters-long tomb peribolos with a 30-meters-tall lion at the top, lead us to believe that this is a spectacular tomb monument. The two Sphinxes at the entrance are dated between 325BC and 300 BC."

"We are very anxious to get inside the tomb, but because archaeological excavations have their own timetable, we do not know exactly when we will enter the tomb," she said.
