ANA/MPA---The Ë-Sat satellite(Hellenic Satellite) made by a group of Greek scientists headed by Periklis Papadopoulos was launched on Sunday night from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, USA.

According to NASA, the Greek satellite 'flies' with Antares rocket which carries the spacecraft Cygnus taking scientific and supporting material to the International Space Station (ISS). Cygnus is expected to arrive to ISS on July 16.

The satellite was launched on Sunday at 19.52 (Greek time). The launch was initially programmed for Friday night but it was postponed due to adverse weather conditions. NASA said that until now the process has been running smoothly.

The satellite's mission is to study the impact of the cosmic radiation on graphenium while at low earth orbit conditions.

Ë-Sat was designed and constructed by the international Greek scientific students group "Lambda Team" based at Silicon Valley, California. The group's website slogan is "Greek Minds at Work".

Dr. Papadopoulos, professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of San Jose, said that the Lambda group promotes and supports Greek scientists. Professor Papadopoulos in statements to the media said that the cost of the satellite was approximately 100,000 US dollars and that it would also contribute to the protection of the Greek-owned merchant vessels from piracies.
