  • [01] SYRIZA leader promises to reclaim Greece's standing in Europe

ANA-MPA -- The Greek people are putting down the foundations for a new Greece, one with "a voice, dignity and substance in Europe," main opposition Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) leader Alexis Tsipras said on Friday, speaking at Iraklio, Crete's main city.

In a rally prior to Sunday's double elections - the second round of local government, and Euroelections - Tsipras unleashed a harsh attack against Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, leader of New Democracy, and government Vice President Evangelos Venizelos, leader of PASOK, saying that "Greeks want to put an end to the rule and regime of deterioration, corruption, lying, blackmailing and fear."

Samaras and Venizelos, he said, "have forgotten what dignity, transparency, sincerity, honesty and ethos mean" and charged the prime minister with fooling the Greek people, for promising to "negotiate sixteen points of the memorandum, then after elections putting the memorandum above the country's democratic constitution." Tsipras said that the premier promised cake to a people whose bread he took away, and continued his attack with Venizelos, saying the latter "became a lord chamberlain in Samaras' court and a follower of the extreme right."

Tsipras claimed that Samaras' New Democracy, "like a persistent gardener, sowed and cultivated the poisonous and flesh-eating plant of fascism" and that the extreme-right Golden Dawn (Chryssi Avgi) was not an enemy of the people, as it is touted, but the long and deadly arm of the system.

SYRIZA, he said, "committed to reinstating Greece as an equal member in Europe and the eurozone through a new negotiation that will confirm to the letter the validity of the fundamental treaties the country has signed."

[02] PASOK leader Venizelos: 'Vote with an awareness of historic consequences'

ANA-MPA -- PASOK party leader Evangelos Venizelos called on citizens in an interview with NERIT state broadcaster to vote with awareness of the historic consequences of their vote and added that "we must all make a final national effort together."

Venizelos accused main opposition Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) leader Alexis Tsipras of calling on the citizens to vote against the government and government policy so that sacrifices will be "be wasted and for us to return to zero and even below zero."

He further said that those believing that if they vote for SYRIZA will return to the state they were in before 2009 "are making a tragic mistake because if the country is led to disaster and we squander the effort we made over 4.5 years, the second illusion will be worse than the first". He added that "we must take a series of initiatives that unite the nation."

As regards the discussion on voters of the Golden Dawn (Chryssi Avgi) party, Venizelos said that "any flirting with the leadership of Golden Dawn or its local administration groups is repulsive".

Venizelos also stressed that "PASOK was always open" to others, adding that the movement of "Elia is a platform for all of us to cooperate but of course when we have attitudes that are closed, very closed, such as the attitudes of Democratic Left (DIMAR) it is difficult for us to reach an understanding".

Lastly, he termed it feasible for former PASOK voters to return to it, saying, "Can't you see that Tsipras' and SYRIZA's efforts have lost their edge?"

[03] Strong quake between Samothrace and Lemnos

A strong earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale was recorded at 12.25 on Saturday southwest of Alexandroupolis in the sea region between Samothrace and Lemnos.

The quake was felt in Athens and according to the Geodynamics Institute its depth was 10 km.

Samothrace police said to ANA-MPA that the tremor was very strong and lasted very long. Minor damages were reported on Lemnos and Samothrace
