  • [01] High winds lash Attica, as the north gets first snow and sharp drop in temperatures

Trees fallen from storm winds on Tuesday blocked traffic and led to over 230 calls to the fire brigade for help removing objects throughout the Attica prefecture, while northern cities got their first snow of the season and a severe drop in temperatures.

Police diverted traffic on Dimokratias Street in the western Attica city of Menidi after winds that reached 8 Beaufort uprooted trees, and traffic had to be redirected also in the Patisia district in Athens and in Piraeus on Venizelou Street. Cars were also damaged by fallen trees, including two cars at the Menidi train station.

In Thessaloniki, temperature fell to 7C, while Florina had flurries and 2C on Tuesday morning and Kozani had rain with 6C. Cars had to use chains to move on rural roads off Kastoria and police advised chains for cars driving to the ski centres of Vassilitsa in Grevena and Kaimaktsalan.

[02] Greece up 14 notches in Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index

In Transparency International's 2013 Corruption Perceptions Index, Greece came in 80th, 14 notches better than 2012 when it ranked 94th, the non-governmental organisation said on Tuesday, adding that despite the economic crisis Greece has taken measures to combat corruption.

Denmark and New Zealand tied for first place out of 177 countries - meaning they were perceived to have the lowest levels of state sector graft.

"This year, for the first time, Greece is doing better and I think it shows that the government is efficiently combatting corruption," the organisation's researcher Finn Heinrich said.
