  • [01] Ministry strips Golden Dawn deputies of police protection

Greek Police will no longer provide police escorts to Golden Dawn (Chryssi Avghi) deputies, while all cases involving the party will be taken over by the Antiterrorist squad, the Public Order and Citizen Protection Ministry announced Friday.

Prompted by the murder on Tuesday of Pavlos Fyssas, a 34-year-old leftist, by a self-confessed follower of Golden Dawn, on Tuesday night, which has resulted in widespread reactions across the political spectrum and Greek society, the ministry also said it was waiting for a ruling by Supreme Court prosecutor Efterpi Goutzamani on a letter sent by Minister Nikos Dendias late on Thursday.

In the letter, Dendias listed prosecutable acts by members or followers of Golden Dawn and requested that she take action. His letter was based on the premise that the party is exhibiting features of a criminal organisation and uses practices of organised crime.

In terms of polie escorts, exceptions will be made by personal application by deputies who are scheduled to appear in specific places and there is actual threat to their safety.

In its announcement, the ministry said, "the assignment of particular police escort to Golden Dawn deputies is institutionally and legally incompatible with the obligations of the Greek Police and the values of protecting the state of law and the parliamentary government it serves."

[02] FinMin concludes meeting with Moody's officials Friday

ANA-MPA -- Greek Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras completed a meeting with officials from Moody's credit rating company on Friday, as part of a round of information talks over the course of the Greek economy.

Ministry officials told ANA-MPA that the meeting could lead to an upward revision of the Greek economy's outlook and the country's fiscal situation by Moody's, to be followed by an upgrading of the country's credit rating after completion of the troika's assessment.

Stournaras is expected to present his assessment that "the signs of recovery are visible" during a new round of negotiations with the troika - starting on Sunday - in order to avoid pressure over the need for additional measures.

The troika's inspection will be made in three stages: by October 10, the focus will be on implementation of prior actions agreed to disburse a loan of 1.0 billion euros (finalising restructuring plans for Hellenic Defense Systems, Hellenic Vehicle Industry and Larco, settlement of state debts to Athens Water and Thessaloniki Water companies, inclusion of 12,500 civil servants under a mobility status by the end of September and adopting a new lawyers' code).

Negotiations will be suspended for the annual summit of the IMF (October 11-13) and a Eurogroup meeting (October 14), to be resumed by the end of October. This round will focus on updating a memorandum and covering a fiscal gap in the period 2015-2016 (the troika estimates this gap at around 4-5 billion euros, while the Greek side puts it at around 2.5 billion euros).

The "hot" issue of a funding gap (estimated by the IMF at around 10.9 billion euros) will be examined in November-December, during the third stage of a troika inspection.
