[01] Empress Sissy's palace on Corfu to be restored
ANA-MPA/ The restoration of the old palace complex on Corfu, known as
the Achilleion, the extension of its current museum usage was approved
on Thursday by the Central Council of Modern Monuments.
The Achilleion was built in 1889-1892 by Austro-Hungarian Empress
Elisabeth ("Sissy") and after her death purchased by Kaiser William II
of Germany. During World Wars I and II, the palace was abandoned and
pillaged by enemy combatants. In recent years, it operated as a casino
and afterwards was turned into a museum.
The restoration project will include the complex's four buildings:
the palace (the museum), the regiment building, the Baron's building
and the porter's building.
Maintenance will include reversible interventions to protect the
buildings from humidity, corrosion and structural distortions. Moreover,
the palace's initial main stairway (the Heine stairway), which is near
collapse, will also be restored.
