[01] Socar announces agreement to buy 66 pct of DESFA
ANA-MPA -- Socar, the Azeri state energy company, on Friday announced it
has reached an agreement with Greek authorities to buy a 66 pct equity
stake in DESFA - the operator of the national natural gas system.
In an announcement on its website, Azernews said that the advisory groups
of Socar and Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund were working on
the last technical issues of the deal.
Rovnag Abdullayev, Socar's chairman, said the decision to buy a majority
stake in DESFA was harmonized with existing high-level relations between
Greece and Azerbaijan and between Socar and top Greek energy companies.
"Socar has a great interest in beginning activities in Greece as this will
be our first such plan in the European Union," Abdullayev said. He added
that Socar was very optimistic over the future cooperation with DESFA.
