  • [01] PM to confer with gov't partners on Wednesday

    AMNA--Prime Minister and New Democracy (ND) leader Antonis Samaras will meet with the leaders of the two junior partners in his three-party coalition government on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

    The meeting with PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos and Democratic Left (DIMAR) leader Fotis Kouvelis will focus on the final details of all outstanding matters ahead of the return of the heads of the European Commission (EC), European Central Bank (ECB) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Troika of Greece's international lenders to Athens on Thursday and a new round of inspections.amna

    The prime minister's intention is that all the outstanding matters will have been found by then, and that solutions will have been found to the two thorny issues of the mobility programme in the public sector and the collection of the real estate surtax.amna

    DIMAR continues to have reservations on the real estate surtax, and has made it clear that it will not vote in favor of continuing the surtax.

    A meeting on this issue was recently held between Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras and the PASOK and DIMAR leaders.

    [02] Independent Greeks leader visiting Cyprus

    AMNA--Cyprus Parliament Speaker Yiannakis Omirou and visiting Independent Greeks party president Panos Kammenos reassured here on Tuesday that Greece and Cyprus will walk together in these difficult moments to bring prosperity, growth and social cohesion again, in both Greece and Cyprus.

    Kammenos also held separate meetings on Tuesday with left AKEL party secretary general Andros Kyprianou, European Party (EVROKO) president Dimitris Syllouris and the leadership of the Ecologists Movement.

    [03] Seamen's strike on Wednesday

    AMNA--Ships will remain docked at ports throughout the country on Wednesday as seamen are staging a 24-hour strike in protest of an Omnibus bill by the Merchant Marine Ministry on "restructure and other provisions" currently in its second reading in parliament.

    Protests over the omnibus bill are escalating, and Merchant Marine ministry civilian personnel are also taking part in the strike, while dockworkers will hold a five-hour work stoppage from noon to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

    Seamen's', dockworkers' and ministry and port authority staff unions have called for withdrawal of the Omnibus bill, which has already been passed in its first reading ('in principle'), even at the last minute

    [04] Deputy FM on TAP pipeline

    AMNA--Speaking in favour of the imminent ratification of the Greece-Albania-Italy agreement regarding the natural gas pipeline in Parliament on Tuesday morning, Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Kourkoulas said the construction of the TAP Interadriatic pipeline will be one of the most important investments taking place in Greece and will have a positive impact in the foreign markets in the current crucial economic phase.

    Kourkoulas explained that the ministry and diplomatic forces has made tremendous efforts, especially in Brussels and Washington, to achieve their favourable neutrality in the TAP project.

    The deputy Foreign minister stressed that the TAP will have zero cost for the Greek taxpayer. The project's construction will be funded entirely by private capital and it is regarded as one of the biggest foreign investments in Greece with its value exceeding 1.5 billion euros, creating thousands of jobs. amna

    Kourkoulas also clarified that the host country's agreement under consideration anticipates the future channeling of gas to Greece's network. He reassured that the agreement will anticipate the observance of all environmental and other terms of the EU and the possibility of providing natural gas to Bulgaria through the Greek-Bulgarian pipeline and to western Balkan countries at a future stage.

    [05] Exhibition on Alexander the Great in Germany

    AMNA--An exhibition on the life and work of Alexander the Great, with 450 archaeological exhibits for which 42 museums from all over the world cooperated, will be taking place until November 3 at the Lokschuppen exhibition premises in the Bavarian city of Rosenheim.

    The exhibition is being organised by the Archaeological Museum of Munich, in cooperation with the Munich Sculptures Museum and the Louvres, London and Berlin museums as well as another 37 museums.amna

    The exhibition portrays the vision of Alexander the Great to unite culturally the known world at the time and includes big maps and charts on his course, items of his daily life and describes, with the assistance of audiovisual material, the war operations and the construction of projects in peace time.
