The minister stressed that all necessary measures to protect the environment and sea mammals swimming the waters where the exploration is taking place have been taken.

He also pointed out that the activities of the survey vessel "PGS" were being monitored by the coast guard and the Greek Navy, with the supervision of both the foreign ministry and the environment ministry, making any violation of international environmental rules extremely unlikely.amna

[04] Striking Industrial Mining S.A. workers demand to take over plant as cooperative

AMNA--Striking workers at Thessaloniki's Viomihaniki Metaleftiki (Industrial Mining S.A.) - a subsidiary of the now bankrupt parent company Philkeram Johnson - on Wednesday announced their intention to form a cooperative that will operate the now defunct plant. In a press conference at Thessaloniki's Labour Centre, they outlined a series of proposals that would allow them to take legal ownership of the plant and to run it as a cooperative.

"If our proposals are not accepted, so that we have the opportunity to operate legally, we will go in and work in any way that we can," said their representative Makis Anagnostou.

The workers, who have been unpaid and on strike since September 2011, were demanding that they receive shares in the plant and said they have already submitted a public offer to take over ownership of the plant facilities in legal fashion. In this framework, they have asked and expect a quadrilateral meeting with the administrator appointed to manage the bankrupt estate and representatives of the labour and development ministries. amna

They are also demanding that, in the framework of the parent company's receivership, that there is a 'declaration' of a loan to Industrial Mining S.A. amounting to 1.92 million euro so that, after the value of the Industrial Mining's shares is subtracted, workers can ask for shares. In this way, they say that shares can legally pass into ownership of any worker wishing to participate in the cooperative venture and to get the factory running again, managed by its workforce.

The strikers also called for a one-off payment from the Manpower Employment Organisation OAED and the continued payment of strike benefits to cover their heightened living expenses.amna

They said that they have been in contact with foreign cooperative solidarity networks, groups and even special-purpose 'banks' that support similar occupied factory facilities in Argentina and elsewhere, who had shown an interest in funding or participating in the investment and in supporting their venture if it should begin.

The main opposition 'Coalition of the Radical Left' (SYRIZA) party issued an announcement expressing support for their demands and called for the immediate introduction of a legal framework that legally protected the power of workers to put an abandoned business back into operation.
