BRUSSELS (AMNA) -- Representatives of the European Commission (EC), European Central Bank (ECB),and International Monetary Fund (IMF) 'T]troika' will return to Athens on July 24, a spokesman for European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs Olli Rehn confirmed here on Thursday.

[02] Minister: Roughly 1.5 mln legal, illegal migrants currently in Greece

AMNA / An estimated 1.3-1.5 million non-EU foreign nationals -- both legal and illegal -- currently reside in Greece, Interior Minister Evripides Stylianidis told a migration conference in Athens on Wednesday evening

He told a one-day conference, entitled "Double Challenge: Economic Crisis and Migration", organised by the Constantine Karamanlis Foundation and the Center for European Studies, that between 2005 and the present 550,000 arrests of illegal migrants have been recorded, many of which were repeat arrests for the same individuals.

Further, according to Frontex figures, some 120-350 people attempt to illegally enter Greece from the Greek-Turkish frontier on a daily basis.

Citing police statistics, Stylianidis said foreign nationals record a high percentage of involvement in violent crimes -- such as homicides, rapes and armed robberies -- vis-a-vis Greek transgressors, while they also account for the largest share of violations in terms of intellectual property theft (bootleg CDs and DVDs). "The result is that a sense of fear and insecurity has justifiably been created among Greek citizens," he added.www.amna.gr

Stylianidis further said that some 150-200 applications for political asylum are submitted daily, and currently 30,000 cases are outstanding.

As for migrant holding centers, he said facilities for 5-6,000 individuals are needed in the Evros region near the Greek-Turkish frontier and for at least 30,000 in Athens and Thessaloniki, adding that mainly defunct disused military camps would be used for such facilities.

The immediate goal is to stem the flow of illegal migrants towards urban centers with parallel mass detentions in the urban centers, he said, adding that the priority in deportations will be placed on groups of high-risk for public order and the public health.amna
