  • [01] Tsipras: Message of joint struggle, solidarity

    BERLIN (AMNA/F. Karaviti) - Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) leader Alexis Tsipras conveyed a message of joint rallying and solidarity and a joint struggle between the Greek people and the French and German people in his visits to Paris and Berlin on Monday and Tuesday.

    Speaking to reporters in the German capital, following his contacts with the Left Party's (Die Linke) co-chairman Klaus Ernst and Parliamentary Group leader Gregor Gysi, with the leader of the Social Democrat Party (SPD) Sigmar Gabriel and the leader of the Greens' Parliamentary Group, Tsipras reiterated that the only path for maintaining the eurozone's cohesion and for the rescue of the common currency is the abandonment of the austerity programmes and the implementation of a growth policy.amna

    "This ordeal does not only concern Greek men and Greek women, but all the Europeans. If Greece is led to a path without return, the same will happen all over Europe," Tsipras said, and spoke of a historical responsibility of Europe's leaders. He stressed that the Greek people have the right to choose, underscored the need for common European solutions to be found for the problem and expressed the conviction that "soon the Greek people, with their vote, will give a prospect and hope to all the peoples of Europe." amna

    Tsipras called on the peoples of France and Germany to show in practice their solidarity to the Greek people, choosing Greece for their vacations.

    [02] Incidents in Patras outside former factory housing migrants

    AMNA---Incidents occurred on Tuesday evening outside the installations of the former Piraiki-Patraiki factory in the western port city of Patras, when a group of demonstrators attempted to storm the building where migrants are staying.

    The demonstrators threw stones at riot police who tried to push them back with the use of teargas. At the same time fires broke out near the installations and firemen rushed to the scene to place them under control.amna

    It is reminded that residents of the southern suburbs of Patras, which are near the new port, held a protest rally earlier in the day over to the fatal injury of a 30-year-old Greek man by three Afghanis and in tandem called for the removal of the immigrants from their area.

    The EU Summit in Brussels on Wednesday and the eurobond issue as well, French President Francois Hollande's stance on Greece, mostly dominated the headlines on Wednesday in Athens' newspapers.

    [04] Athens Stock Exchange opening: Decline

    AMNA--Equity prices were declining at the opening of trade on Wednesday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), with the basic share price index down 0.61 percent, standing at 532.69 points at 11:00 am, and turnover at 1.861 million euros.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was down 0.69 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was up 0.47 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was up 0.13 percent.amna

    Individual sector indices were moving downward, with the biggest gains in Oil and Gas, up 1.36 percent and in Health, up 0.40 percent.

    The biggest losses were in Commerce, down 4.01 percent; and Public Utilities, down 1.29 percent.amna

    Of the stocks traded, 15 were up, 20 were down, and 13 were unchanged.

    [05] Greece's 'Aphrodisiac' in Eurovision final

    AMNA--Greece's "Aphrodisiac" was among the songs that qualified for the final of the Eurovision song contest in Tuesday night's first semi-final held in Baku, Azerbaijan. Singer Eleftheria Eleftheriou and the group of dancers gave an excellent performance and were voted for by the committee of critics and the people of Europe.

    Aphrodisiac, with words and music by Dimitris Stassou, Mikaela Stenstrum and Dajana Loof, and the entries from Romania, Moldova, Iceland, Hungary, Denmark, Albania, Cyprus, Russia and Ireland, which also qualified, will compete in the final of the 57th Eurovision Song Contest that will be held on Saturday in Baku.
