  • [01] KKE leader: Worse storm ahead

    AMNA--Communist Party of Greece (KKE) secretary general Aleka Papariga voted on Sunday in Petroupoli, wider Athens region.

    After the procedure, KKE leader said that "we feel the need and the duty to remind the Greek people that a storm is coming, a storm worse than that which we have already experienced ".amna

    Papariga stressed that traps exist in other parties' positions, noting that her party appeals to the Greek people with one position - "with a strong KKE the hope exists" - and underlined that the people should not relax in the following days. amna

    "We will be here," concluded Papariga.

    [02] SYRIZA leader: Democracy will return to its birth land

    AMNA--"Today is a day of celebration, because after two and a half year of barbarism, democracy returns to the land where it was born," said SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras after casting his vote on Sunday at an Athens voting precinct.

    "The people will put their seal and signature for a change and will send a resounding message to all of Europe," opined Tsipras, because, as he said "the Memorandums' barbarism has no place in our common course".amna

    Concluding, Tsipras noted that the people will turn page and leave behind the powers of the disaster and tomorrow, all united, will create a new Greece.

    [03] PASOK leader hopes people will vote with common sense

    AMNA--PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos voted on Sunday in Thessaloniki and expressed his hope that the people will decide with "historic conscience, calm and common sense" on the country's course.amna

    "The people's vote concerns us and we are awaiting their judgment with total respect for democracy. We have said the whole truth and the people are aware of the conditions and the problems, the risks and the prospects. However, today's vote, today's decision of the people, concerns the citizen himself, his family, his children and his future".

    [04] Samaras: Greeks vote for the future of their children

    AMNA- New Democracy (ND) leader Antonis Samaras cast his vote early Sunday in his hometown Pylos, southern Peloponnese.

    Samaras stated: "Today the Greek people are voting for the future of their children. They are voting for stability, development, security and justice." amna

    After voting, Samaras headed back to Athens.

    [05] PM Papademos appears certain on the formation of gov't

    AMNA--Outgoing interim Prime Minister Lucas Papademos on Sunday expressed his certainty that next week a government will be formed, after casting his vote in an election precinct in Athens.amna

    "The citizen's vote is the culminating moment of democracy and we all agree that these elections are the most critical in Greece' modern political history. Every one of us will judge and decide not only who will govern but also on the course of the country in the coming decades," said Papademos

    The parliamentary elections in Greece dominated the headlines on Sunday in Athens' newspapers.

    AVGHI: "The solution is the Left- Current of change and hope gives strength to the unity proposal to the Left parties".

    KATHIMERINI: "Day of responsibility for all - Probable scenarios based on the electoral correlations".

    ELEFTHERI ORA: "For now: Difficult days await Greece".

    TO VIMA: "Ballots bomb- Greeks vote with anger but they are anxious over the economy and the euro - Uncertainty over the formation of a government and worries of political instability".

    [07] Museums, archaeological sites closed on election Sunday

    AMNA--All museums and archaeological sites in Greece will remain closed to the public on Sunday, May 6, when the country holds general elections, with the exception of sites such as the Acropolis and others that operate two two shifts a day, in which case this will be reduced to one.
