  • [01] Unemployment jumps to 21.8 in January

    Unemployment in Greece jumped to 21.8 percent in January 2012, from 14.8 percent in January 2011 and from 21.2 percent in December 2011, the independent Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) said on Thursday, with the number of unemployed shooting to 1,084,668 persons.

    The number of unemployed persons increased by 46.6% compared with January 2011 .

    The unemployment rate for females (25.7%) is considerably higher than the unemployment rate for males (18.7%) while, in a comparison of the different age groups, the highest unemployment rate is recorded among young people in the age bracket of 15-24 years (50.8%). amna

    ELSTAT, in a report, said that in January 2012 the number of employed amounted to 3,880,120 persons, decreased by 8.6 compared with January 2011 and by 0.7 compared with December 2011.amna

    The geographical areas (NUTS II regions) with the highest unemployment rate are Attica (23.2), Macedonia-Thrace (22.6%) followed by Thessaly and Sterea Ellas (22.5%) and Epirus-Western Macedonia (22.5). The lowest unemployment rates are observed in the Aegean (14.9%) .
