[01] Thessaloniki's historic theatre Avlaia reopens after fireAMNA / The historic theatre Avlaia in downtown Thessaloniki is reopening to the public six years after it was destroyed by a fire in September 2005.The theatre, originally built in 1934, reopens on Thursday evening with the first of a series of theatrical performances planned by its new operators, who are also preparing parallel cultural events, such as art exhibitions and seminars. The new Avlaia (which means opening or premier in Greek) premieres with Hatty Naylor's play "Ivan and the Dogs", a story of survival on the bleak streets of Moscow in the 1990s as seen through the eyes of a child, a play which is based on the true story of four-year-old Ivan Mishukov, who spent two years living with a pack of stray dogs on the Moscow streets until he was discovered by police in 1998 and eventually adopted. The play is directed by Giorgos Economou, with Aris Servetalis portraying Ivan. The performances of Ivan and the Dogs will run for 10 days, through January 15, beginning at 9 p.m. on weekdays except Monday and at 7:30 p.m. on Sundays. www.amna.gr The following performances scheduled are: Alexandros Papadiamandis' "The merchants of the nations", directed by Thodoris Ambatzis, from January 25 to February 12; Maro Bourdakou's "Letter to a Child", directed by Manos Petousis, from February 17 to March 12, based on Oriana Falacci's book "Letter to a Child Never Born"; Marivaux's "La Dispute", directed by Corina Vassiliadou, from February 23 to March 18; and John Logan's "Red", directed by Stamatis Fasoulis, from March 15 to April 15.
