  • [01] FM: Turkish deal with occupied territories invalid

AMNA/The government of the Republic of Cyprus was the island's only legal representative and any deal between Turkey and the Turkish-Cypriot regime in the occupied northern territories was "invalid and naturally devoid of content," Greek Foreign Minister Stavros Lambrinidis stressed in Parliament on Thursday.

"The Turkish threats must stop. The Cyprus Republic's government is the only legal representative on the island and exercises, on the basis of international law, the rights to contract international agreements and to exploit wealth-producing resources," he emphasised.

Lambrinidis made the statement in reply to a question tabled by Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS) MP Kyriakos Velopoulos concerning the possibility of Turkey creating problems in the region around the Greek island of Kastellorizo and urging Greece to immediate declare an Exclusive Economic Zone in the region.amna

"The Turkish side is obliged to refrain from threats and actions that provoke tension and violate international law and sovereign rights. The road of tensions is mistaken and dangerous," Lambrinidis stressed in reply, noting that he had relayed as much to his Turkish counterpart during recent meetings, as had Prime Minister George Papandreou in talks with Turkish premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan.amna

"Turkey's recent actions and statements in response to the Cyprus Republic exercising its self-evident sovereign right to exploit its natural wealth run counter to international law, undermine the stability of the surrounding region and cause particular concern," he added.

[02] Rallis painting 'Holy Friday' to be auctioned in London

AMNA/One of the most important works by Greek painter Theodore Rallis (1852-1909) will be auctioned at the Greek Sale of Sotheby's auction house on Tuesday, 22 November, in London.

The painting "Holy Friday" (Meghali Paraskevi), created in Paris in 1885, comes from a private collection in Great Britain and has not been on display in the last fifty years.

The oil painting on canvas was presented in Paris the year it was created, and its estimated worth is between 340,000-540,000 euros.

'Holy Friday' portrays a church during Easter preparations. It shows four girls working together to decorate the Epitaph (bier) with flowers while two priests are talking to each other.

[03] Roesler: Default not an issue of discussion

AMNA/ Default is not an issue of discussion. The issue at hand is to support all the eurozone member countries and Greece, visiting German vice chancellor and economy & technology minister Philipp Roesler said on Friday morning, following a meeting with Greek development minister Mihalis Chryssohoidis and before attending a Greece-Germany Business Forum in Athens.amna

The two ministers are due later to sign a memorandum of cooperation which, according to Roesler, contains three points: administrative technical assistance, resolution of outstanding issue with German businesses, and prospects for financing investments in Greece.amna

Chryssohoidis, in turn, said that the German companies participate in the Greek GDP with 12 percent, and post among the highest profitability in Europe.

[04] Greece, Poland sign tourism promotion agreement

AMNA/Deputy Culture & Tourism Minister George Nikitiadis and Polish Tourism Ministry Undersecretary of State Katarzyna Sobierajska signed an agreement on Thursday laying the foundations for the further development of tourist cooperation between Greece and Poland and the strengthening of the relations between the two countries.

The agreement anticipates the promotion of cooperation between the tourist authorities, with the aim of increasing arrivals and encouraging cooperation between private businesses and agencies.
