  • [01] Rehn, FinMin confer ahead of eurogroup

BRUSSELS (ANA-MPA) -- EU Commissioner for economic and monetary affairs Olli Rehn received Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos here on Monday for expected talks on the closely watched implementation of the Mid-term fiscal strategic programme and preparation for the Eurogroup meeting later in the day.

Venizelos and Rehn also discussed the technical assistance to the Greek government from the Commission and EU member-states for implementation of its fiscal programme.

Venizelos placed priority on a greater absorption of the National Strategic Reference Framework and EU structural funds in a more beneficial and speedier manner, as well as a clampdown on tax evasion and preparation of the new taxation system.

[02] Peres praises decision on Gaza flotilla

(ANA-MPA) -- Israeli President Shimon Peres on Monday thanked visiting Greek counterpart Karolos Papoulias for Athens' decision to prevent the sailing of vessels attempting to break through an Israeli naval blockade of Gaza from Greek ports, according to an AFP dispatch from Jerusalem.

"Thank you for stopping the flotilla, in accordance with the recommendations of the UN Secretary General. With this action, you contributed to calming the situation and, in the final analysis, to the good of Gaza," Peres was quoted by AFP as telling the Greek president of the republic, who is on an official visit to Israel.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon, via his spokesman, had on May 27 asked of all governments concerned to use their influence to discourage such flotillas to Gaza, expressing fear of violence.

    [06] Gov't: Tourism sector up

(ANA-MPA) -- Greek tourism has apparently resisted the crisis and is faring well, Culture & Tourism Deputy Minister George Nikitiadis said on Monday.

Speaking to ANA-MPA in Athens, the minister said a strategy implemented by the ministry was bringing results and said that the domestic tourism product was not affected by the street violence in Athens last month.

Amongst others, he noted that tourist arrivals at Greek airports rose 9.52 pct in the first six months of the year. He acknowledged, however, that one cannot be fully satisfied with this performance, as the country was regaining ground lost in the previous years.

"Greek tourism could become the engine of the economy on the condition that the country improves the quality of its tourism services, extends its tourist season and takes advantage of its sea tourism potential".

Finally, (ANA-MPA) Nikitiadis dismissed various press reports of late claiming that the country was selling its islands, merely noting that anyone who wanted to invest on Greek isles was welcome. (ANA-MPA)
