  • [01] Juncker, Rehn on Greek economic crisis

STRASBOURG (ANA-MPA) - Eurogroup President Jean-Claude Juncker and Commissioner Olli Rehn pointed, during their addresses on Monday at the European Parliament's Economic Affairs Committee in Strasbourg, to the absolute implementation of the commitments undertaken by the Greek government towards the EC/ECB/IMF troika, as well as the full adoption, by the main opoposition party of the policies of the programme that Greece has agreed to.ana-mpa

Commissioner Rehn stressed that if there is no progress in the promotion of structural changes in crucial sectors of the Greek economy, the June tranche will not be disbursed. Both the Commissioner and the Eurogroup president assured that an issue of Greece's exit from the euro was never raised, nor of the restructuring of the Greek debt with the curbing of the value of state bonds. Indeed, Juncker termed the privatisations in Greece necessary.

The two EU officials also stated that they consider political consensus in Greece, mainly on the part of the main opposition party, necessary for the programme for the recovery of the Greek economy to proceed smoothly.

[02] Photo exhibition in old WWII bomb shelter

ANA-MPA/A speleological photography exhibition is currently on display in an old WWII bomb shelter in the 40 Ekklisies district of Thessaloniki, featuring impressive photos of exploration expeditions carried out by the Thessaloniki Speleology Association "Proteus".

The bomb shelter, a large man-made cave which the local residents sought refuge in when the sirens rang during the war, had fallen into abandonment, but recently re-opened at the initiative of Proteus.

Visitors of the exhibition don helmets fitted with a lighting device to enter the cavity, which is lit only by small candles.

The cavity, located beneath Pavlou Mela square, was created with controlled explosions before the war and later served as a bomb shelter in WWII. It is a 22-metre long and 2.5 meter high corridor, with a steady temperature of 17 C and a relative humidity of 100 percent, Proteus general secretary George Sotiriadis told ANA-MPA.
