  • [01] Murder suspect arrested

ÁÍÁ-ÌPÁ/Jealousy was, according to police, the motive for the murder of a 29-year-old Greek a year ago on the 40th km of the Athens-Sounio highway near Koropi, northeastern Attica.

Police announced on Tuesday that they have solved the case, explaining that the assailant and his accomplices -- two young Albanian men and a 23-year-old Albanian woman -- had set up an ambush for the victim near Koropi. The suspect is a 26-year-old Albanian who had suspicions that his former girlfriend was in a relationship with the victim. The suspect, aided by the 23-year-old woman, created a fake profile on Facebook to lure the victim to a remote area. The woman persuaded the victim to meet her at the chosen spot, was shot several times by the suspect, resulting in his death.ana-mpa

Police spotted the 26 year-old Albanian on Sunday on Alimos beach. The suspect jumped into the see to escape when he spotted the policemen. The police officers followed him and finally arrested him.

The suspect will be led on Tuesday before a prosecutor

    [02] Natural beauty of Halkidiki

(ANA-MPA) -- The verdant Halkidiki prefecture is one of Greece's most picturesque and best-known holiday destinations, combining pine-covered slopes with some of the finest sandy beaches in the country. Others, though, have a special preference for its mountainous areas and visit Halkidiki during the winter season when Mt. Holomondas is covered with snow and temperatures at around zero. Holomondas one of the most interesting mountains in Greece. With abundant fauna and flora it is a natural habitant for a variety of animals that seek refuge on its slopes.

Halkidiki has three wildlife sanctuaries, in which hunting and the trapping endangered species is strictly prohibited. The area is home to 40 mammal species and 160 bird species, and has large populations of roes, boars, foxes, squirrels, jackals, wolves, otters, weasels, golden eagles, black storks and owls, to name a few.

A large number of amphibians and reptiles are also found in the area, including 12 of the 22 endangered species of amphibians, among them the most endangered species, the Mediterranean turtle. (ANA-MPA)
