  • [01] Samaras: Defeat for government

ANA-MPA/Main opposition New Democracy (ND) party leader Antonis Samaras, addressing deputies who are elected in the Attica region on Monday, stressed that "PASOK sustained a strategic defeat," adding that "the (general election" bluff did not succeed and the Greek people sent a resounding message of change in policy."

Samaras further said that "we can win Attica and we shall win it" and called on his deputies to intensify their efforts and to support the candidacy of Vassilis Kikilias.NA-MPA

ND is now focusing its efforts on Attica and the Peloponnese, since the two regions have an increased political importance, while constituting wagers of the party's president. It is characteristic that Samaras was critical towards the deputies of Attica who did not help in the first round.

In general, ND shows satisfaction over the reading of the election results. Codifying their conclusions, party officials said that "the elections constitute a clear political defeat for PASOK and Mr. Papandreou and a total return of ND following last year's heavy defeat."

They also believe that ground exists in the second round of the elections since the extortionate dilemma of Parliamentary elections will not exist.

The New Acropolis Museum in Athens has won the British Guild of Travel Writers' (BGTW) prestigious global award for the Best Worldwide Tourism Project for 2010.

The prize was presented to deputy culture and tourism minister George Nikitiadis, representing the Greek government, during a ceremony on Sunday night in London.

Nikitiadis thanked the organisers and the voting travel writers, noting that this distinction has opened the door for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to their homeland.

[03] 9 dead in bus accident

ANA-MPA/Nine people were killed and 34 injured, of which 11 seriously, when a Greek long-distance bus fell over a 120-meter cliff near the Albanian town of Tepelene, during a heavy rainfall on Monday night.

The accident occurred when the driver of the bus, which carries out the Athens-Tirana-Athens route, braked suddenly to avoid crashing into a truck that was obstructing the road, but the vehicle swerved and went over the cliff.

The bus, carrying 49 passengers, had set off from Tirana at 7 p.m., and 2 1/2 hours later, in heavy rainfall, had reached a very narrow point on the Tirana-Kakavia road, between Tepelene and Ballsh, where a truck was taking up most of the road. A few minutes later, a Greek businessmen driving by alerted authorities.ANA-MPA

The passerby managed to rescue a pregnant Greek-Albanian woman and an injured young Albanian man, with both rushed to a hospital in nearby Ballsh.

    [04] KKE satisfied with results

ANA-MPA/The Communist Party of Greece's (KKE) Central Committee in an announcement following its session on Monday expressed satisfaction over Sunday's results in local government elections and assessed that they highlighted the party as a rising power with the acquisition of thousands of new votes, so that "it is being recognised that KKE is the only party that increased its strength in votes and percentages."ANa-MPA

As regards the second round of the elections, the KKE reiterates that "the rallying of popular forces, in contrast to the policy of (ruling) PASOK and (main opposition) New Democracy (ND) and in radical opposition with the barbarism of the Memorandum, the options of the IMF and the EU aiming at a continuous memorandum, must be enlarged in the second round as well. No vote in favour of the tickets of PASOK or ND where they are facing each other in the second round. Neither PASOK nor ND want and can change."

With the facts so far, the Central Committee said, compared to the national elections of 2009, there is an increase in votes by 70,000. The percentage approaches 11 percent, meaning that it is increasing by 3.3 percent. The Central Committee assesses that regardless of the vote, the number of those who judge positively evaluations and positions of KKE is widening, they are interested in knowing our alternative political proposal, they recognise the party's struggling political role and contribution.
