[01] Samaras at EPP meetingMain opposition leader Antonis Samaras, in Brussels for a European People's Party (EPP) summit, met on Wednesday evening with EPP President Wilfried Martens and discussed the economic situation in Greece, as well as that of Europe in general. In statements after the meeting, Samaras stressed that ND had supported many decisive measures and structural changes adopted by the current Greek government in order to achieve fiscal discipline in Greece, pointing out that several of these measures had been initiated when ND was in government. At the same time, he stressed that his party had serious objections to a policy mix that "was achieving less than 50 percent efficiency in reducing the deficit" and to austerity measures that were "deepening the recession rather than restricting the deficit". Concerning economic governance in Europe, Samaras said that he had conveyed his concern to Martens over recent rifts in Europe's social cohesion and stressed that the EPP was in favour of a social market economy, operating along healthy free market principles and fiscal discipline based on firm foundations of social cohesion. Samaras stressed that an effective fiscal adjustment was not possible in an economy that was collapsing and a society that was falling apart. He announced that Martens had accepted an invitation to come to Athens on December 14 for the launch of his political autobiography at the Constantine Karamanlis Institute of Democracy. On Wednesday evening Samaras will attend an event organised by ND at the European Parliament and attend a working dinner with ND MEPs. On Thursday he will take part in the EPP summit and have a meeting with European Council President Herman Van Rompuy. All three were swept away, but rescuers were able to locate and rescue the mother and son. Indicative of the force of the torrent is the fact that the son was found by rescuers five kilometers from the spot where his car had stalled. The search by EMAK rescuers and volunteers was continuing for the father. Heavy rainfall and torrential local storms throughout Wednesday caused major problems and flooding of basements and ground floors throughout the country.
