  • [01] Military flatly dismisses press report on patrolling of Athens FIR

(ANA-MPA) -- Greece's national defence general staff on Wednesday categorically dismissed local reports claiming that Hellenic Air Force planes have been ordered not to intercept intruders within the Athens Flight Information Region (FIR).

"All (radar) traces entering the Athens FIR without previously submitting a flight plan, as provided by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), (ANA-MPA) are being intercepted and identified in accordance with regular practice," a general staff statement underlined on Wednesday.

The statement was made in response to article in an Athens daily on Wednesday, which claimed that Turkish military aircraft are not being classified as hostile. (ANA-MPA)

[02] Greek president issues clemency appeal for Tariq Aziz

(ANA-MPA) -- President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias has appealed to Iraq President Jalal Talabani to intervene in order to stop the execution of the country's former foreign minister, Tariq Aziz.

The latter was sentenced to death by an Iraqi high tribunal, according to an announcement issued by the president's office on Wednesday.

Papoulias underlined in his message (ANA-MPA) that such a gesture on the part of Iraq's president would be duly appreciated by the friends of Iraq in the European Union and worldwide and will indicate the difference between the current democratic present and the Mideast country's past. [03] Papandreou-Gruevski meeting

(ANA-MPA) -- Prime Minister George Papandreou will hold a meeting with his counterpart from the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (fYRoM) Nikola Gruevski in Brussels at noon on Thursday.

The meeting with Gruevski will take place on the sidelines of a European Council summit that will be held in the Belgian capital.

In a related development, according to an ANA-MPA dispatch from Brussels, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, speaking shortly after his meeting with the fYRoM premier, expressed the view that progress must be achieved in respect to the nagging "name issue".

Speaking during a joint press conference, Barroso stressed that a year ago the EU Commission decided to abolish the visa requirement for fYRoM citizens travelling to the EU, not only in recognition of efforts made by the country, but also to urge Skopje to proceed with a solution to the "name issue".

"We must proceed with this issue. The suitable moment has arrived. The country must not lose this historic opportunity. The past must not hold the future hostage," Barroso said.
