    Equity prices were declining at the opening of trade on Thursday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), influenced by declines on the European markets, with the basic share price index down 0.85 percent, standing at 1,422.10 points at 11:15 am, and turnover at 9.712 million euros.

    Individual sector indices were moving mostly downward, with the biggest gains in Mass Media, up 3.06 percent; and Commerce, up 0.86 percent.

    The biggest losses were in Public Utilities, down 5.21 percent; and Construction, down 1.88 percent.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was down 1.37 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was down 0.12 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was down 0.18 percent.

    Of the stocks traded, 21 were up, 41 were down, and 212were unchanged.

    The social security bill and the labour unions' reactions, the Finance Ministry's new bill referring to borrowers and overindebted households, the VAT increase and the salary freeze in the private sector, mostly dominated the headlines on Thursday in Athens' newspapers.
