The 19th Nafplion International Classical Music Festival, which is dedicated this year to the music and artists of Switzerland and Poland, kicks off on Friday evening with a concert in central Aghiou Georgiou Square.

The Festival events, under the artistic direction of noted pianist Yiannis Vakarelis, will run through June 27, with daily performances in Aghiou Georgiou Square, in Palamidi (Venetian Fortress) and in the Vouleftikon (the first Hellenic Parliament).

The latter exhibition presents people and places connected to the life and the work of the composer, as well as archive material of the National Institute F. Chopin in Warsaw. The exhibition is co-organised by the Embassy of Poland in Athens, with the collaboration of the National Institute F. Chopin in Warsaw.

    [05] KKE: 'Savage class attack'

Communist Party of Greece (KKE) General Secretary Aleka Papariga on Thursday challenged Prime Minister George Papandreou to tell "hundreds of thousands of working-class families what they should do when, in a short while, they will be unable to pay their electricity and phone bills, road tolls and taxes, they will not be able to buy even basic foods for their families".

She said that the Greek people should not recognise nor respect either the debts or the memorandum with the EU-IMF, adding that the high public debt was not created by the people but by high profits, massive state subsidies, privileges and huge tax exemptions for business.

The people must "declare war on the war that the PASOK government, plutocracy and the EU-IMF are continuing and escalating," KKE's leader stressed.

Concerning a presidential decree on labour issues, she underlined that this was a piece of evidence proving that the government and its allies were "literally ruthless".

"They are the grave-diggers of any entitlements left to the working class," Papariga stressed, adding that the measures imposed a "Dachau conditions for life".

"From 15 years old until deep old age, young people will be condemned to live and work for one purpose only: to preserve the capitalist Minotaur," Papariga said.

She stressed that the labour and social insurance measures now being passed by the government would condemn people to work for a mininal wages, pension and health care, while lifting all regulation of lay-offs, drastically cutting redundancy compensation and essentially legalising uninsured labour for young people employed on starvation wages.

Calling on workers to "appreciate the depth and savageness of the class attack they were under," Papariga urged the working class, young people, women, pensioners, self-employed and poor farmers to join in forming a uniform and determined front against the measures.
