  • [01] 'Athina 2010 ' Art Festival opens

The annual art festival Art Athina 2010 opened on Thursday night at the indoor Taekwondo stadium the Athens coastal district of Faliro and will run until May 16. In spite of the global economic crisis, Art Athina organisers have managed to secure the participation of 58 galleries in 11 countries, with more than 300 artists representing this year's predominant trends in painting.

The event also features a tribute to artistic books, with 120 volumes that stand as works of art in their own right, produced by 60 artists.

Also making its first appearance at Art Athina is the Institute of Modern Greek Art, involved in the recording and certification of post-war Greek art.

    [02] Pipelines developments

Merging future operations of two Russian-supplied oil pipelines, the planned Samsun-Ceyhan and Burgas-Alexandroupolis pipelines, is reportedly being studied by the Russian side, although no final decisions have been taken, according to officials of the Trans-Balkan Pipeline, a participating corporate entity on Greek side.

Both projects, projected to carry Russian crude oil, aim to bypass transport via the congested Bosporus straits.

Burgas-Alexandroupolis will have a length of 336 kilometres and carries a price tag of 2.5 billion euros, whereas Samsun-Ceyhan extends for roughly 600 and costs upwards of five billion euros.

Turning to current developments, a preliminary environmental impact study on the Greek portion of the pipeline project was submitted for approval to Greece's environment ministry last summer, with approval pending. A final decision, meanwhile, is expected by the Bulgarian government on the project's environmental aspects.
