In statements afterwards, Clinton was positive on the Greek economy and on Papandreou's efforts.

He opined that the problem of the Greek economy stems from the fact that the EU first unified its currency before union at economic and political level, adding that the long-term prospects for Greece remain "exceptionally auspicious" and that it is a good bet that it will overcome the crisis.

[02] Suspect killed in exchange of fire with police

According to early information, the crew of a police patrol car passing by the site spotted in a car two persons they perceived as acting suspiciously, and asked them to present identification. The two suspects disembarked from the car and opened fire against the policemen, who returned the shots.

[03] Talks on pipelines

"Greece supports the immediate promotion of works regarding the construction of the two pipelines of mutual interest, the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline and the South Stream natgas pipeline, while it pursues close bilateral cooperation with Russia," Maniatis said.

Individual sector indices were moving upward nearly across the board with the biggest gains in Banks, up 1.28 percent; and Insurance, up 1.66 percent.

The biggest losses were in Financial Services, down 0.84 percent; and Telecoms, down 0.86 percent.

The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was up 1.58 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was up 1.42 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was up 0.28 percent.

Of the stocks moved, 37 were up, 15 were down, and 22 were unchanged.
