  • [01] PM meets with former US President Bill Clinton

    Washington (ANA-MPA/T. Ellis) -- Prime minister George Papandreou met on Tuesday with former US President Bill Clinton.

    In statements afterwards, Clinton was positive on the Greek economy and on Papandreou's efforts.

    He opined that the problem of the Greek economy stems from the fact that the EU first unified its currency before union at economic and political level, adding that the long-term prospects for Greece remain "exceptionally auspicious" and that it is a good bet that it will overcome the crisis.

    [02] Suspect killed in exchange of fire with police

    ANA-MPA/An as yet unidentified man was killed in an exchange of fire with police at dawn Wednesday in the northeastern Athens suburb of Dafni.

    According to early information, the crew of a police patrol car passing by the site spotted in a car two persons they perceived as acting suspiciously, and asked them to present identification. The two suspects disembarked from the car and opened fire against the policemen, who returned the shots.

    [03] Talks on pipelines

    ANA-MPA/Deputy Environment, Energy and Climate Change Minister Ioannis Maniatis met on Tuesday with the ambassador of the Russian Federation Vladimir Chkhikvishivili, with talks focusing on the promotion of pipeline projects.

    "Greece supports the immediate promotion of works regarding the construction of the two pipelines of mutual interest, the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline and the South Stream natgas pipeline, while it pursues close bilateral cooperation with Russia," Maniatis said.

    [04] Kakoyiannis Foundation opens

    President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias and Cyprus President Demetris Christofias inaugurated on Tuesday evening the ''Michalis Kakoyiannis Foundation", housed in an Athens central building.

    The inauguration event took place in the presence of Cypriot born Michalis Kakoyiannis, director of world acclaimed films such as Stella, Electra, Zorba the Greek and The Trojan Women.

    [05] ASE opening: Rise

    Equity prices were rising at the opening of trade on Wednesday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), with the basic share price index up 1.30 percent, standing at 2,112.19 points at 11:00 a.m., and turnover at 28.383 million euros.

    Individual sector indices were moving upward nearly across the board with the biggest gains in Banks, up 1.28 percent; and Insurance, up 1.66 percent.

    The biggest losses were in Financial Services, down 0.84 percent; and Telecoms, down 0.86 percent.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was up 1.58 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was up 1.42 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was up 0.28 percent.

    Of the stocks moved, 37 were up, 15 were down, and 22 were unchanged.

    Prime Minister George Papandreou's meeting with US President Barack Obama in Washington, the US government's decision to abolish the visa requirement for Greek citizens and the US's political support to Greece, the deliberations in Europe aiming to establish a common front against speculators, and the nationwide labour strike on Thursday, dominated the headlines on Wednesday in Athens' newspapers.
